Nirnaeth – “Splendour of the Abyss”

I first discovered Nirnaeth a couple of years ago, when I managed to get my hands on their last album, “Thrown Athwart the Darkness”. I soon found myself hooked, so when I found out that “Splendour of the Abyss” had been released (through Great Dane Records), I knew I had to give it a listen.
After having heard “Thrown Athwart the Darkness”, there were certain things that I was expecting to hear on this release. Before I even pressed ‘play’ I was preparing myself to hear unrelenting Black/Death Metal (with an emphasis more on the Black Metal), doused in hatred with a rhythm section that will make your head explode… all wrapped up nicely with riffs-a-plenty and grim melodies.
Thankfully, Nirnaeth deliver the goods on this record and manage to push the envelope that little bit further. The tracks are extremely memorable (check out “Grace Beyond the Flesh” as a prime example) and band seem even tighter this time around.
“Spendour of the Abyss”, quite simply, is a must.
Quotes
You give me a stage and you will see the difference between Nokturnel and most other bands.
— Tom Stevens, Nokturnel, http://bit.ly/Injd6y...so now we’re thinking about the next step. And don’t worry. When we hit the road, I guarantee we won’t miss the UK!
— Damyen, Northern Plague, http://bit.ly/JuT8SgI think illegal downloading is fine if you download just to listen, and if you like it, you buy it. If you don’t like it, delete it off your computer.
— Mike Priest, Absence of the Sacred, http://bit.ly/IGNpWkI think more bands should prioritize exposure over sales. The more exposure, the more sales. Be it ticket sales, album sales, or merch sales. That’s the way I see it.
— Necrol, Secrets She Kept, http://bit.ly/HEaNHXWe don’t adhere to any specific writing style. If something works, it gets improved, then it gets used!
— Gideon, Crow Black Sky, http://bit.ly/InizpyCryptic Throne is a dark shamanic ritual. An entity which exists for the Primordial Thursian Worship of Dark Germanic Heathenism.
— Abyssous, Cryptic Throne, http://bit.ly/IlJsYsEven when all seems fine Plaag will still be around to do a little tormenting here and there...
— Somber von Plaag, Plaag, http://bit.ly/IvTyW2The underlying theme is through the discovery of truth we find ultimate hopelessness. Each song explores death in a different context and theme.
— Voldamares, Eclipse Eternal, http://bit.ly/Hv2kYEThe lyrics are mainly based in fantasy, and try to convey a larger concept, peppered with metaphors that hint at some very personal events and feelings.
— Ruptured Souls, The Furious Horde, http://bit.ly/HyfPUxI am personally still a CD buyer and probably always will be. I like having the physical artwork in my hands. Mp3’s to me are not very attractive because I feel I’m not getting my money’s worth.
