Balfour – “Devil’s Payroll” | Loucifer Speaks
Bloodstock Open Air

I found out about Balfour (not to be confused with Balfor – the barbaric Black Metal band) through Twitter. Yup, they certainly made me aware of them… an endless stream of tweets appeared in my timeline (ok, not ‘endless’, but there was a few!) all with a link to the band’s YouTube in them. Unfortunately, I usually use Twitter when I’m on my phone, so I can’t access YouTube.

Luckily, the band was kind enough to send over a MP3 of their track “Devil’s Payroll”… and it seemed only right that I should review it.

Balfour have a very retro sound and they play their version of Classic Rock very well. When you listen to this track, it’s easy to imagine that you’re in the late ‘70s / early ‘80s. The vocalist has quite a strong voice and song has been put together really well. You get the impression that this band could have been around for ages – there’s a real air of professionalism. With that said, “Devil’s Payroll” isn’t the kind of song that grabbed me on the very first listen, but it’s definitely a grower. By the time I was on my third listen, I found myself really getting into the track and even singing along during the chorus.

Balfour describe themselves as a ‘cheesy’ metal band and, while some of the lyrics are a little clichéd, I wouldn’t wholeheartedly agree with this – purely because of the quality of the music. There’s no way around it, the music’s damn good!

If you’re into Classic Rock / Traditional Metal then it’s well-worth checking this band out.

The only criticism I have in regards for this band doesn’t come from their music, but from their Twitter. Guys, seriously, the insane amount of links to your YouTube page is… well… insane! lol ;)
