Pistol Shot Gypsy – “Smokin’ Drinkin’ Fightin'”

Ok, let me get one thing straight. Today is the second Saturday in a row that I’m wasting sitting in my house waiting for a Sky engineer to come and sort my TV out. Little things like this really piss me off. Usually when I’m in this sort of mood I reach for the nearest Death or Black Metal album and play it until my ears bleed… or I find that Guns N’ Roses’ “Get in the Ring” can usually do the job too.

Anyway, today I have some reviews to catch up on, and this album from Rhode Island’s Pistol Shot Gypsy is at the top of the list. So, rather than spend another day waiting around for someone else to their job – I’m gonna get on, do my job and write this review.

As soon as the opening track, “TrainWreck”, started pounding through my speakers, I could immediately feel my bad mood melting away. You see, PSG play good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll. There’s a bit of a 70s influence, a bit of an 80s influence and a bit of a modern influence. These are songs that make you want to party. Or listen to on a road trip. Hell, they make me want to learn to drive just so that I can listen to this album in the car.

I’m struggling to find a fault with this band or this album. This band is tighter than… a very tight thing (sorry, I’m finding it difficult to think of a metaphor there that isn’t obscene! :) ). The vocalist is impressive and the rhythm section has me wanting to move. I dance pretty badly, so I’ll leave it up to you to decide if this is a good thing or not!

These guys have a nice collection of strong, memorable songs as well. “TrainWreck” immediately springs to mind, as do “Just My Luck”, “Slave Yourself” and “Troy City Blues”. Also, the cover of the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider” goes down a treat. Putting this album on makes me think that summer is just around the corner. I recommend that everyone go and pick this one up to cure those winter blues. You won’t regret it. I promise. Oh, this is kinda unrelated, but while you’re there, also pick up Trucker Diablo’s album too. I can guarantee that those albums are gonna be rocking my summer this year. Perhaps PSG and Trucker Diablo should tour together?

In conclusion, you need this album. Nuff said.
