I read today that James Henderson, drummer for metallers I.C.O.N, has decided to leave the band. The following statement was issued through the band’s official mailing list:
“To all friends of I.C.O.N -
It is with considerable regret that I.C.O.N must sadly announce the departure of drummer James Henderson.
James joined the band in 2005 and made I.C.O.N his home very quickly. He has been an incredible powerhouse behind the kit for us and a very important person in the development of I.C.O.N over the last 6 years.
His decision to leave the band was not made lightly but he feels he must move on to a new phase in his life and we completely accept his decision. There is no animosity, no problems, no anger and as he leaves the band, James is still and always will be a brother to us.
More than his drumming, we are going to miss James as a person terribly and his sense of humour, drive and spirit which has made the last 6 years so special for us all. His commitment to the band has been enormous and he has been very strong during tougher times for us.James, we will miss you in the band very much indeed. Thank you for everything you have done for I.C.O.N and all the very best to you mate.”
The band are also on the lookout for a new bassist:
“Our bassist Joe has been with us since last September. He has been superb to work with and a great deal of fun, but Joe is a very busy musician with lots of projects he’s committed to and unfortunately cannot give I.C.O.N his full attention.
Therefore, we will also be searching for a full time member to join us on bass guitar.
Joe will continue to work with us when he can though as we search.”
The band will be honouring some future dates, but cancelling others. The full details were also written in the newsletter:
“Obviously, this now means huge change for I.C.O.N.
After a great deal of thought and consideration, we have decided to continue.
I.C.O.N means too much to us to let go of and we have worked too hard to quit.
We are building a fantastic fanbase and we are on the verge of great things for the band. So, what next…?
First, we’re going to take some time out to regroup and get things in order.
Unfortunately, we are going to have to cancel our upcoming UK dates in late May and in June.
We apologise to our friends in Preston, Derby and Hull, but rest assured, we will return as soon as we possibly can.Our European tour in July WILL go ahead as planned however. We are delighted to have our good friend Larry Paterson (Chokehold, IV Stroke, Blaze Bayley) behind the kit for this tour. Larry has generously offered to fill the drum stool for these shows in Europe and we are very grateful he’s stepping in.
We will still be appearing on ‘BBC Introducing’ on BBC Radio Lancashire on Thursday 9th June. We will be performing a couple of acoustic versions of I.C.O.N songs and chatting with presenter Sean McGinty.
Change can also be very exciting. We are now looking forward to this next phase of I.C.O.N. We will continue to write our next album and are going to record and release it in 2012 as planned. Our determination and passion for the band has become even stronger.
Our search will now begin for new members of the family to join us on drums and on bass guitar. We will keep you all updated.
If anyone reading this feels they have what’s necessary to succeed in a busy, hard working metal band, we are happy to arrange an audition. Email us at iconrock@hotmail.co.uk, but please, only serious, dedicated musicians willing to put in 100% with no other bands on the go. Life in a band is often not as glamorous as you may think…
Thank you for your amazing support of I.C.O.N. We’re hugely appreciative.
We are very lucky to have so many people who love what we do.
We love it too, and that is why we will continue and return.
Stronger, meaner and more determined than ever…We WILL see you soon.
Stay metal,
Mark Sagar

— Damyen, Northern Plague, http://bit.ly/JuT8SgI think more bands should prioritize exposure over sales. The more exposure, the more sales. Be it ticket sales, album sales, or merch sales. That’s the way I see it.
