Wolfhorde – “Deathknot” EP

On October 28, 2011, in CD / MP3 / EP, Featured, Review, by Loucifer

I recently started a thread on the Loucifer Speaks forum about how people who buy phyiscal versions of albums have a stronger relationship with those albums in comparison to those who just download them. I still stand by theory, but it would now seem that with Wolfhorde’s “Deathknot” EP, I have found an exception to that rule.

“Deathknot” is available as a ‘pay what you like’ download from the band’s BandCamp page – so, you can get it for free if you want. Since I discovered the band when I had less than no money in my bank account, I thought it was best to get the release for free, rather than trying to pay for the download or the CD. Now that I have listened to “Deathknot” on countless occasions, I have no doubt that I will eventually buy the CD. And, here’s why…

The release contains nine tracks (or ten if you buy the CD) and therefore feels more like an album than an EP. Hell, I own albums that are shorter than this! Not that I’m complaining, this is good stuff so the more the better! Wolfhorde play fantastically well executed Folk Metal and, as you would expect, there’s a mixture of traditional folk instruments alongside those of a more metallic nature.

I find that a lot of Folk Metal bands can either do the “happy, jolly, let’s all have a drink” thing really well, or the “let’s go into battle thing” really well, or the “depressing, a hero has just died, thing” really well. Wolfhorde are not like this at all – they manage to do it all and more… REALLY WELL. Each song creates an atmosphere (and I guess each song tells a story, but I don’t know the lyrics) and each one is very different. This release is a creature with many different sides. As a result, this is an EP (or an album!) that I want to listen to again and again. Since I discovered the band two or three days ago, I’ve found myself listening to it at least once per day… and I really don’t see this calming down any time soon.

In conclusion, I’d recommend “Deathknot” to anyone who likes Folk Metal. In fact, I’d recommend it to anyone. Wolfhorde for Bloodstock?

On 24th October, Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler posted the following message on his official website:

“The album is done. Details coming soon. The first set of invitees have been brought in to listen (no press copies kids), and the response is fantastic.

Press has begun for the release and the tours we have coming in 2012.

We’ve made it this far.
