Review
For some unknown reason I’m always slightly put off by bands which only have two members. I’m often swamped with the feeling that the music is going to be over-indulgent – perhaps to an unlistenable degree – and I often wonder how the band come across live, or if they tour at all. This bothers me as the live element of Metal is extremely important to me.
With that said, I gave "Scripture Of The Woods" a really good listen and… I was impressed! If it was my recording I possibly would have ‘beefed’ the whole thing up a bit to give it a fuller sound, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed what I heard. Is ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ the right phrase to use when talking about a Black Metal album? I don’t know, but it’s a fact so it’s staying!
The lyrics have an almost 'old world' feel to them and are largely focused on Pagan themes. At the moment, this subject interests me greatly, so Dragobath have scored an extra point there! Some of my favourite lyrics are as follows:
"Fly throughout the centuries and all the ancient eras / Warm blood of the enemies of ancient faith appear… / Feel the call / Strength and might / Feel the spirit / Of the night..." (from Scripture Of The Woods)
"Now victory is on the edge on ancient pagan sword / New world will be baptized in blood and thus reborn / Nefarious is burned away and pummeled into ground / No modern gods or other trash is nowhere to be found" (from Anamorphis Into The Ancient Aeons)
Dragobrath have created just the right mix of brutality and melody and the inclusion of Darkthrone’s "Transylvanian Hunger" is a stroke of genius.
I have read on the band’s website that Krukh has left, but Synevir plans to release another record fairly soon. This will be interesting.
