This album was a pure impulse buy for me. Up until purchasing it, I had never even heard of the band let alone know what they were like. I have to admit that the reason I bought this album was because of the cover and I liked the idea that these guys played something called "Primal Caveman Death Metal". Now, I still dont know what separates this kind of Death Metal from other types (as far as I can hear there is very little difference), but it is a great idea and a great way to make Goat The Head stand out from the crowd.
"Simian Supremacy" is full of tracks that make the Obituary fan inside of me jump for joy. The album is laced with that unmistakable old school Death Metal vibe and it just makes me grin manically. The vocals are not unlike the stuff that Chris Barnes did for Torture Killer, but if you're not a Chris Barnes fan don't let this put you off.
The tracks that really stood out for me are "Beast Man", "Bone Throne" (this is possibly my favourite track from the album its just SO good!), "Simian Supremacy", "Devianthropology Pt 1" and "Heinous Hand". In fact, the only aspect that lets this album down is the fact that some metal fans may not take this band seriously or even give them a chance. While the whole 'caveman death metal' idea may be good to get them noticed originally, I fear it may hinder the band in the future. This would be a terrible shame, since I imagine that live these guys would put on an incredible show. Goat The Head are an immense amount of fun I really hope that I can catch them live!
With all that I've said about the 'caveman death metal' tag, I do have to give a huge amount of praise to the CD cover and inlay. I haven't seen this much work put into the inlay for a long time and it's definitely worth reading all that's written in it.
Fans of old school Death Metal should definitely check this band out!
