I chose to review this album by I Suffer Inc because I find that I tend to stick what I know music-wise when it comes to reviewing. I always seem to review music that I like.... Well, this time I've decided to throw myself into the deep end and review something that I wouldn't usually listen to.
Before I listened to "Chronicles Of Lost Purity" I'd discovered that I Suffer Inc fell into Emo / Hardcore territory. At first I thought this would put me off listening completely and, it did for a short while, but once I got over my own snobbery I found that it actually wasn't all that bad. Granted, the vocals were still a few miles from my kind of thing, but one element that really impressed me what the lead guitar in a few songs - especially "Fake But Romantic".
The songs are structured very well and I Suffer Inc seem to know when to let certain part build up and then when to strip them down. One of the songs which really stood out to me because of this was "French Consession".
"In Between" is also worth a mention. This is a beautifully calming piece of guitar and is an instrumental track which I could listen to again and again.
With that said, I really couldn't get on very well with "Fallen Star". The vocals built a barrier that I just couldn't get over (particularly the 'cleaner'/trademark Emo ones).
Now, admittedly, I'm probably never going to get into this style of music myself, but I will say this: Perhaps Emo isn't the absolute lowest of the low. As with any genre, some of it can be good, some of it can be bad. I can understand why loads of people like it, but it's just not for me.
