Matron are yet another band that I found because of MySpace. To be honest, and no matter how worrying this may be, I don’t know what I'd do without MySpace to find new bands. That's pretty scary considering I was so against signing up to it to begin with.
All of the songs on "Demonic Sanatorium" are on Matron's MySpace page but I still bought the EP anyway. One reason for this was because the songs are not 'downloadable' and the other reason is because I wanted to do my little bit to support the band. I originally started to listen to these 4 tracks over and over again during one particularly dull day at work (I know most of them are dull... it just that this one was especially so!). Matron had sent out a MySpace bulletin and so I decided to check out their page. I was instantly greeted by a track called "Welcome To Hell" accompanied by photographs of insane, bloodthirsty surgeons. I immediately liked the band.
The EP opens with a track called "Intro (The Prophet)". This track is mainly an instrumental track but with some spoken word bits and provides a great way to launch into the EP.
The first main track is "Welcome To Hell". "Welcome To Hell" is loaded with old school death metal riffs, distinctive vocals and one hell of a guitar solo! This is Death Metal with a definite 'groove' and this keeps the Obituary fan in me very happy indeed. The classical sample that opens "Blood Of Knights" is a fantastic touch. I firmly believe that classical music and Metal blend together magnificently well. This track is slower in tempo than "Welcome..." but it is equally as effective and "Ultimate Bones" contains a healthy portion of headbanging moments.
Oddly enough, at first the vocals were a little strange to me. The vocalist pronounces the words very well and so - in spite of the growling nature of the vocals - it is still possible for the listener to pick up the words during the first couple of listens.
Matron create Death Metal that makes me smile uncontrollably. Every time I put this CD on I find myself grinning like a Cheshire Cat. I can't wait to see them on the 5th October – that should be a fantastic gig.
