Review
Night Conquers Day split in 2002… and I’ve only just found about them… Typical, eh?
I got my hands on this album after seeing that one of my trusted eBay sellers had it listed (he lists 100s of CDs every week). I noticed it on his list a few times, but I was put off by the cover art. However, last week I decided that it was wrong to judge a book… or rather CD… by it’s cover and I placed a bid. Luckily enough for this review, I won the item…
“Rebellion Is The Art Of Survival” consists of six songs and one intro track, and each of the actual songs is well over 10 minutes long. Night Conquers Day definitely make sure that you get your money’s worth!
All of the tracks here are what I would describe as Symphonic Black Metal and have anti-Christian lyrics. I love Symphonic Black Metal, so this stuff was right up my alley. The main vocals are harsh, yet understandable and the clean vocals remind me of King Diamond (check out “Mirror Gazing” for a perfect example of this).
The lyrics are written in such a way that they hardly ever come across as cheesy – as many lyrics do when they are centred around this specific subject matter.
This is an album that I’ve been able to listen to again and again. It is one of the few albums that I have listened to constantly at work for two whole days. Not many other bands can make that claim!
I enjoy albums that can take the listener on a journey – Vesperian Sorrow’s “Psychotic Sculpture”, Nicodemus’ “Vanity Is A Virtue” and the, recently reviewed, “One Size Fits All” by Plutonium all do this masterfully. I am pleased to say I feel that “Rebellion Is The Art Of Survival” definitely joins their ranks.
Overall, this album scores very highly with me but (as usual) there is something I would like to change about it. I think that the tracks sound a bit thin at times and possibly better production could have filled them out a bit. The album would definitely benefit from it. Other than that, I have no other qualms whatsoever. It’s a shame that the band had to split when it did. I have read on their website that a third album was already written, but they never had the chance to record it. It would have been interesting to see where they went from here.
