I'm not completely sure how Godslave ended up on my radar. I think that their EP just appeared in my email inbox one day.... well, whatever happened, I'm now in the position where I can actually review it... which was probably the whole point in them sending it to me in the first place!
The EP kicks off with a track that shares it's name. The track begins with some really creepy singing, that somehow always sends shivers down my spine - even though I know it's coming! It's crazy, but I love it. The track itself is a fantastic helping of Death/Thrash Metal. The vocals are 'extreme' but not gutteral. Leaving it relatively easy to decipher what's being said - much like those of Carcass or Vesperian Sorrow.
"Slaves To The Black" is one of those songs that you can imagine could really get a crowd worked up into a frenzy at a gig. The riff proves to be an incredible reminder of 1980s Thrash and is almost impossible to keep still to.
The next track, "Wings Of Wrath", begins with a siren before launching into a full throttle attack on your ear drums, and "Dead Reckoning" continues the assault. The most surprising track here is the oddly doom-laden "Where The Sun Sleeps", which is definitely worth checking out, even if you have no intention of listening to this EP in full.
The whole EP is full of Thrashy goodness - with various nods to Death Metal along the way. Like many bands out at the moment, Godslave aren't going to win any prizes for being the most original band on the planet... but, is that really the point? Isn't the main thing that they're clearly making music that they love (which is evident from the level of passion on this EP) and putting it out there for other (hopefully) like-minded folk to listen to?
