"Hymns of Satanic Praise" contains 9 tracks that are labelled not by name, but by number.
"Stanza 1", or simply "I", was the first track I heard on the band's Myspace and it also spawned what was to be the beginning of a huge interest in the band. I was also lucky enough to feature the track on the first Loucifer Speaks compilation album. "Stanza 1" paves the way for the rest of the album and gives the listener a good idea of what Orion are capable of doing. Throughout the album you are treated to some serious Black Metal. There's an intense mixture of atmospheric vocals and brutally savage once. The atmospheric vocals are often no more than a menacing whisper. These vocals provide a fantastic extra level to an already impressive Black Metal album.
I love the overall tempo and oppressive feel of "Stanza 3". The feedback effect can prove to be uncomfortable, but then when was Black Metal ever supposed to be like putting your feet up with a nice cup of tea?
"Stanza 4" is one of my favourites here - all of the elements seem to be at their optimum level; the vocals, the drums (especially the drums!), the guitar - everything!
How could the album be improved? Personally, I'd prefer it if the tracks were given more distinctive titles. However, in their current state I can see that they lend the album a certain appeal. They succeed in making the whole album very mysterious.
From a musicial point of view - this is an awesomely dark piece of work.
