I have to admit that I've had this album in my 'to review' pile for a couple of weeks now, but I have only just got around to it now. The fact is that there are some Power Metal bands that I absolutely love, but there are some that I can't stand. The danger that bands face with Power Metal is that an epic song can very quickly turn cheesy. This can occur because of a lyric, a whole chorus or a keyboard part.
The whole cheesy danger zone was something that held me back from reviewing this album rightaway. On the whole, Power Quest have managed to side-step this landmine and, as a result, have produced an exceedingly enjoyable album. Tracks like "Never Again", "Civilized?", "Hearts And Voices" and the awesome "Kings Of Eternity" are instant winners. "The Vigil" hooked me in instantly and I think the combination of vocals really works in it's favour.
But, "Master of Illusion" isn't entirely perfect. I feel that some of the keyboard parts were a bit over the top and in one case almost spoilt an entire song for me ("Civilized?"). However, I do think that this is just a question of taste.
Overall, this is a good album and definitely worth getting if you're a fan of the genre. If you're not really into Power Metal, I'd suggest staying away.
