Nephwrack On the evening of the 6th February, I made my way to Highbury and Islington tube station. I was surprised to see that there were so many police officers about (I don?t generally attract that much attention), but then I noticed a lot of football shirts. Yes, the first time I decided to use that station this year was when Arsenal were playing. ?Great? I thought as I tried to travel in the opposite direction to the crowd. I eventually managed to force my way through the crowds (it?s amazing how quickly people move out of your way when you?re dressed exclusively in black and look a bit moody) and arrive at the Hope & Anchor.

The Hope & Anchor is a fairly small venue, but it has a pretty good atmosphere. The venue consists of three main areas. On the top floor there?s a seating area and a pool table, the ground floor is home to the main bar and the lower ground floor is the stage and another bar ? and, quite obviously, where the gig was held!

The band I had come to see was Nephwrack.

I?d seen them a couple of times before, but over the past year they?ve changed completely. When I saw them at Bloodstock Open Air last July they were a pretty good rock band, since changing their vocalist they?ve become an awesome metal band! The songs are no longer restricted to the run-of-the-mill formula that they were previously and Christian?s vocals work excellently with the twin lead guitar attack.

Nephwrack used this opportunity to play material from their brand new album, ?The Once and Future King? (this is a concept album based around the idea of war ? cheerful, eh?). The crowd seemed to really enjoy the new songs and the band were on top form ? in spite of the fact that two of the members had chest infections! Now there?s dedication for you!

The highlights of the gig were the fantastic ?Cold Skin?, the current single ?Blacks The Sky? (I use the term ?single? loosely since you won?t be able to pick this up in your local HMV) and the sing-along finale ?Fall Of Empires?.

Nephwrack will appeal to fans of melodic metal bands such as Metallica and, to an extent, Slayer. If this sounds like your kind of thing, you can check them out at www.myspace.com/nephwrackband. If you want to catch them live, they?re next in London on 13th April.

That?s it for this issue? Now I shall return to my coffin until the next gig?!!!!!!
