Interview

Bleeding Display

Lou: For the benefit of those who have yet to hear Bleeding Display, please could you introduce yourselves? Also, please could you fill us in on what kind of music you play?

Joao: We are a Portuguese death metal band, with a very solid line-up. Our activities started back in 1999 and along this years we played a lot live, released one album, one split and one promo Cd.

Lou: I first found out about you after another reviewer on Burning Misery (Troi) reviewed your 2006 album, "Ways To End". That review triggered my curiousity and very soon I found myself having a look around your website. So far I have only heard the tracks from from the "Bleeding Promotion" EP. Would you say that there was a change in sound between the two releases?

Joao: Oh yeah, it?s very different. We recorded the Bleeding Promo in February 2002 and the Ways to End album in middle 2005. These 3 years difference was extremely important in our sound and maturity. Also, we changed line up from one release to another. Note that the Bleeding Promo was our first recording ever, and none of us had any experience in studio.
Basically, our album Ways to End was made to be as professional as we could. And I think we did a good job.

Lou: I'd like to thank you for making the "Bleeding Promotion" tracks available as downloads - without them I don't know if my curiousity would have led me any further (as it happens, I will be getting myself a copy of "Ways To End" as soon as I can!). What are your views on downloading music from the Internet? Do you do it yourselves?

Joao:I don?t have much of an opinion about that. Of course I download it myself, and I see lots of times our album for download too. But hey, when I like something I don?t just keep it on my hard drive, I buy the album.
This is the good thing about the internet and downloading from the internet. It?s to get to know lots of stuff, and if you like it, you buy it!

Lou: Bleeding Display seems like such a graphic name - who came up with it?

Joao:I came with the name back in 1999 or 2000. It really is supposed to be graphic and simple in a way that you can memorize it easily.

Lou: On the tracks that I've heard you've got a really good sound. What equipment do you use?

Joao:I think that you referring to the Bleeding Promo tracks. Well today, we don?t think that release have such a good quality/production sound anymore. We use Jackson guitars, Warwick bass, EMG Pickups, Crate, H&K, Sonor, Paiste, Shure?well, the usual shit. Don?t wanna go into the specific models.. we?re not endorsed to make publicity, ehehehh!

Lou: Who, or what, are your biggest influences when it comes to writing music?

Joao:This is one of the hardest questions that always come to the interviews. Well, there are a lot of different influences cause we are 4 different guys. But our main influences comes with some old school DM like Immolation, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and the new brutal death acts like Origin, Dying Fetus, Spawn of Possession..

Lou: Who are your favourite bands? Are there any new bands around at the moment that you would like to recommend to us?

Joao:I have lots of favourite bands. And of course not only into death metal. Lets see; Immolation, Carcass, Vader, for the brutal stuff. My Dying Bride, Tiamat and Samael are other ones that I just love.

My recommendation goes for Portuguese bands. We in Portugal need to jump out of our small country..so check this great music:
The Firstborn - www.myspace.com/unclenchedfists
Grog - www.myspace.com/grogpt
Goldenpyre - www.myspace.com/goldenpyre
Penitencia - www.myspace.com/penitencia

Note that there are lots and lots of other Portuguese bands with the same quality as these, Look for them!

Lou: Where were the album and EP recorded?

Joao: Like I mentioned in the second question, we recorded the Bleeding Promo in February 2002 and the Ways to End album in middle 2005 and them released in 2006 by Sevared & Butchered Rec.

Lou: What is your favourite Bleeding Display track and why?

Joao: Mmmmm, I like a lot to play Revealed Obscenity and the Ways to End track. But to play live, maybe Beyond Flesh. It?s not easy to pick one up!

Lou: A bit of a random one now - If I built time machine and lent it to you for the weekend - what year would you go to and why? Would you travel to the past or future?

Joao: Ehehehe nice question. I don?t fucking know what would I do, but possibly travel to the past. To Prehistory, like 10.000.000 years ago!ahahahah

Lou: Do you have any plans to tour this year? Would you be willing to play a few shows in sunny England? (Hey, it's worth asking, right? hehe)

Joao: This year we have already played some great shows. We played in the Cannibal Corpse/Disavowed tour and we have booked two more good shows in big Portuguese festivals. To play in England would be a great experience and we would love to do it, too bad we never had that opportunity. Let?s see!

Lou: What's next for Bleeding Display? Is there another EP or album in the works?

Joao: Oh yeahh, we are already working on the next album. Let me tell you Lou, It?s gonna be damn brutal! We have 3 tracks almost done and much more to come. We hope to record it this year still and release it in 2008.

Lou: Thank you for your time,

Joao: Thank you Lou for this opportunity. Success votes for you and Burning Misery. Keep it BRUTAL!!
