Interview

Bride Of The Monster
Lou: Hi Scump, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. How long have Bride Of The Monster been together?

Scump: J. and I wrote the EP's songs back in 2004 and early 2005. Dan and Joe signed on when we first went into the studio in 2006 to record the "Plague Of Ages" EP. Now in 2007 Dan and Joe have parted from the band. And J. & I are currently seeking a guitarist or two to complete the new lineup.

Lou: How would you describe the music you play? Death 'n' Roll, perhaps?

Scump: Death 'n roll sounds about right, we've heard that term in a few of our reviews. We call ourselves Canada's First Deathrock metal. So far noone has challenged that claim... I don't know if Deathrock is even a word but it's pretty much what describes us. We're influenced by Deathmetal, Stonermetal, Grindcore, and Metal in general.

Lou: The name Bride Of The Monster conjures up great horror movie images. If you, as a band, could rewrite the soundtrack to a horror movie which movie would you pick?

Scump: Cool question, I've never thought of that. Personally I'd have to say the original Dawn Of The Dead. The original soundtrack is cool but funny & cheesy at times. I personally would also love if BotM did the soundtrack to Ed Wood's Orgy Of The Dead just to have naked 60's chicks dancing to deathmetal.

Lou: Would you use songs that you've already written - if so, which ones? - Or would you write something else entirely?

Scump: No I personally would rather write something new from beginning to end. That's just my opinion though.

Lou: I've just noticed on your website that you guys were due to make a movie. Could you tell us a little bit about it? What was it going to be about? (I'm suddenly thinking that my earlier movie question was very apt! haha)

Scump: Joe and I wrote a screenplay in 2004 and we intended to film a mockumentary about a band starring Joe, J. and I. Then J. and I wrote some songs for the soundtrack, then said fuck this we're having more fun jamming and gigging than we were writing, filming & editing. So we dropped the film, added Joe and Dan on guitars and moved the band to the next level. Due to Joe's recent departure to the band the film will not be released. I run a shitty production studio for film and have tons of footage of the band dicking around pulling pranks on passerbys in the streets of Toronto. That combined with footage of our shows and whatnot will eventually make it's way to DVD.

Lou: If there was going to be a movie made about Bride Of The Monster - who would play you?

Scump: Take the cast of the '55 film Bride Of The Monster, I'm sure between Bela and Tor and the Monster we could make a decent cast...

Lou: What has the feedback been like for the "Plague Of Ages" EP? I noticed that you made it into the most recent issue of Zero Tolerance here in the UK - Well done guys!

Scump: Thanks. Feedback has been great actually. Canada's most popular metal magazine BW&BK gave us a very positive review and we got an equally great review in America's most popular underground metal magazine Metal Maniacs. All of our reviews have been very positive... although they all show disappointment in the length of the EP and the name of the band. haha.

Lou: The intro track on the EP mentions one of my favourite things in the world - bourbon! haha! If I was going to buy a round for Bride Of The Monster in a bar, would you all be drinking?

Scump: Burbon? Fuck yeah. But our drink of choice is Black tooths. Triple shot of Seagrams7 with a splash of coke and a toast to Dime.

Lou: Which track on the EP are you most pleased with?

Scump: I like Float a lot but I listen to Plague more than any of the other tracks. It's fast, short, to the damn point, and always makes me headbang.

Lou: Do you have any plans to release a follow up EP, or perhaps an album in the near future?

Scump: Absolutely. Once we complete the new lineup we will hit the studio and record a few tracks which may be our first full length.

Lou: Will you be touring this year? Can you be tempted to do some European shows... preferably a couple in the UK....?

Scump: We're still unsigned and only play shows in Ontario right now but we'll see what the future brings. I'd give anything to tour Europe.

Lou: I've had a look at the gigs you've played in the past. I've noticed that you've shared the stage with fantastic acts like Deicide and Quo Vadis. What has been your favourite gig so far?

Scump: I think I can speak on behalf of the band when I say the most fun we ever had at a show was the Dimebag Tribute show we played last December. We played some originals but mostly Dime tunes. It was a fuckin riot.

Lou: If you could tour with any other band (active or otherwise)who would it be and why?

Scump: Down. Just to hang with 'em. Sharing a stage with them would be just incredible. Maybe Blood Duster because their my personal fav. I would go back to 1994 and tour with Pantera, Sepultura, Obituary, Slayer, Carcass, and maybe White Zombie.

Lou: I'm a sucker when it comes to merchandise, is there anywhere online that our readers can get themselves a Bride Of The Monster t-shirt?

Scump: We'll have shirts when we have a new release, probably sometime late this year. Go to BrideOfTheMonster.org for all merch, updates, mp3s, videos, and to read our reviews. Thanks again for the interview.
