Huron

Huron are set to release their debut album, "Cheyne Stoking", through Rising Records later this month (on 25th May 2009 to be precise!) so it seemed only right to ask them a few questions about it...

Lou: Hi guys, thanks for agreeing to this interview! It's very much appreciated! For the benefit of the readers of Loucifer Speaks, would you mind telling us who is in the band?

SICK-BOY SIMS: PALMER - VOCALS / SICK-BOY SIMS - GUITARS / DAMIEN DIABLO - DRUMS / FILTHY PHILL - BASS

Lou: How long has the band been together?

SICK-BOY SIMS: SINCE NOVEMBER 2007.

Lou: Has there been any line-up changes since the band's inception?

SICK-BOY SIMS: YEAH, 2. WE BROUGHT PHILL IN ON BASS AUGUST LAST YEAR AND DAMIEN COAME IN ON DRUMS JANUARY OF THIS YEAR.

Lou: Who would you cite as you major influences?

SICK-BOY SIMS: WELL, WE GET COMPARED WITH PANTERA A LOT BUT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON US. OUR MAJOR INFLUENCES WOULD HAVE TO BE DOWN, METALLICA, COC, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, BLACK SABBATH.

Lou: Where does the name Huron come from?

SICK-BOY SIMS: ITS THE NAME OF A NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN TRIBE WHO WERE DECENDENTS OF THE MOHAWKS.

Lou: I've just pre-ordered "Cheyne Stoking". Could you fill me in on what I'm letting myself in for? How would you decribe the album?

SICK-BOY SIMS: I WOULD SAY ITS A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE OF PURE METAL AND RAGE.

Lou: How long did the album take to write and record?

SICK-BOY SIMS: WE'D BEEN WRITING THIS ALBUM SINCE DAY ONE. I WOULD SAY WE WERE STILL WRITING UP TO THE POINT WHERE WE SET OFF FOR IPSWICH IN OCTOBER TO RECORD THE DAMN THING. I THINK THERE WAS AROUND 14 OR 15 SONGS THAT DIDN'T MAKE THE ALBUM. EVERY TIME WE WROTE A SONG, IT WAS BETTER THAN THE LAST SO WE ENDED UP BINNING A SHIT LOAD OF MATERIAL. THE ALBUM TOOK 3 WEEKS TO RECORD.

Lou: What sort of subjects have you tackled on the album?

SICK-BOY SIMS: WAR, PAIN, ANGER, TATTOO'S, WOMEN, YOU KNOW, THE USUAL STUFF.

Lou: Where can the readers of Loucifer Speaks pick up a copy of "Cheyne Stoking" from?

SICK-BOY SIMS: THE ALBUM IS RELEASED ON MONDAY 25TH MAY AND IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AT WWW.HMV.COM / WWW.PLAY.COM AND WWW.AMAZON.CO.UK.

Lou: Which track or tracks from the album is your current favourite and why?

SICK-BOY SIMS: DAMN, I HATE THIS FUCKING QUESTION. (HA HA!!!). ITS A HARD ONE TO CHOOSE. WHEN YOU WRITE YOU OWN MATERIAL YOU KINDA HAVE A PASSION FOR EVERYTHING YOU WRITE.

Lou: How did the deal with Rising Records come about?

SICK-BOY SIMS: WHEN WE RECORDED OUR FIRST SET OF DEMO'S, WE SENT THEM OFF TO EVERY INDIE LABEL WE COULD THINK OF AND RISING WAS THE BEST OFFER WE GOT AT THE TIME.

Lou: I've noticed from your MySpace that you tour a hellova lot! Where are your favourite places to play?

SICK-BOY SIMS: ON THIS TOUR, WE'VE MET A LOT OF NEW PEOPLE AND THEY HAVE BEEN RELLY SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT WE ARE DOING. WE LOVE PLAYING TO LIVELY AUDIENCES THAT FEED US BACK THE ENERGY WE GIVE OUT ON STAGE. YOU GET THE ODD ONE HERE AND THERE WHERE YOU GET A CROWN THAT JUST DON'T MOVE OR MAKE ANY NOISE AND THAT CAN MAKE IT REALLY HARD TO KEEP THE ENERGY GOING ON STAGE. THE LAST GIG WE PLAYED AT HOME HERE PLYMOUTH HAS TO BE THE BEST YET.

Lou: Is there anywhere that you haven't played yet, but would like to?

SICK-BOY SIMS: EUROPE AND AMERICA.

Lou: Festival vs gig? Which do you prefer?

SICK-BOY SIMS: DEFINATELY FESTIVALS.

Lou: How would you describe a Huron gig?

SICK-BOY SIMS: RAW, ENERGETIC AND BRUTAL.

Lou: Aside from "Cheyne Stoking", which albums are you looking forward to this year?

SICK-BOY SIMS: BEING ON TOUR, MAKES IT HARD TO KEEP UP WITH WHATS DUE FOR RELEASE IN 2009. I HAVEN'T SEEN OR HEARD OF ANYTHING YET THAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HEAR. I KNOW DOWN WILL BE RECORDING A NEW ALBUM IN OCTOBER BUT THAT WON'T BE OUT TIL NEXT YEAR.
I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO WRITING THE NEXT HURON ALBUM INBETWEEN OUR TOUR DATES. THE RISING DEAL WAS A ONE ALBUM DEAL, SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR A NEW LABEL TO PUT THE NEXT ONE OUT ON. WE'VE GOT AROUND 3 OR 4 NEW SONGS WE WILL BE WORKING ON DURING OUR APRIL BREAK. WE'VE ALREADY BEEN PALYING 2 NEW SONGS ON THE TOUR THAT WE ARE WAITING TO DEMO.

Lou: What would you change, if anything, about the metal scene at the moment?

SICK-BOY SIMS: I'D LIKE TO SEE AN END TO ALL THE EMO / SCREAMO SHIT THAT'S ABOUT AT THE MOMENT.

Lou: Fancy a beer next time you're gigging in London (or Croydon for that matter!)?

SICK-BOY SIMS: ONLY IF YOU'RE BUYING!!! LOL

Lou: Thanks for answering my questions!
