Help! I’m lost! What’s going on? – If those are the thoughts rushing through your mind during the first visit to this site, fear not – this page should (hopefully) shed some light onto the stuff that Metalwork has to offer. If you feel that something is missing, or we haven’t explained something well enough, please leave a comment below.
Your Profile
When you register you’re asked to create a profile. Should you ever want to change something on your profile (such as your picture, favourite bands or make things like your birthday only visible to your friends) then follow these steps:
- Go to the top bar and hover your mouse over the “My Account” tab. When the drop down menu appears, hover over the “Profile” option. This will bring up the option to either view your profile, change your avatar or edit your profile.
- For this example, lets say that we wanting to make our birthday only visible to our friends. In this case we would click on the “Edit Profile” option.
- On this page you’ll be able to see the information that you entered when you registered. Some of the info, such as your date of birth, your real name and your location, have options underneath them. You should see drop down menus which allow you to change the visibility from “Everyone” to either “My Friends” or “Only Me”.
Adding Music to Your Profile
To add music to your profile go to “edit profile”, click on the “media” button and fill in the relevant field. Please note that only ONE player will be displayed on your profile (even if you’ve put in details for both BandCamp and Tunecore) – the site will automatically pick the uppermost box. Details on how to add your music player are included on the page, but if you need any help, please let me know.
Please pay careful attention to the instructions on the “edit profile” page as some of the players require an ID # to be used and not your URL. Again, give me a shout below if you get stuck.
The Activity Stream
The Activity Stream tells you exactly what’s been happening on Metalwork – here you will find who has just become friends with who, who has just joined, who has added a photo, who has posted an update, who has left a comment on a blog and who has posted a blog… and pretty much everything else. To access the Activity Stream just select “Activity” from the Community Menu on the side of your screen.
Adding Photos
Wanna add some photos to your profile? Hover your mouse over the “My Account” tab in the very top menu. When the drop-down menu appears go to “Album” and then you can either choose to view your pictures by selecting “My Pictures” or upload a picture by selecting “Upload picture”.
Posting an Update
Facebook calls it “posting a status”, we’ll call it “posting an update”… but, lets face it, it’s ultimately the same thing. You can post an update from either your profile page or from the Activity Stream. Just write whatever’s on your mind in the box that’s asking you “What’s new?”. Easy peasy!
Sharing a Video
Found a video on YouTube or Vimeo that your friends will love? Wanna share it? No problem!
Start as if you’re about to post an update, but instead of just adding some text and clicking “Post Update”, click on the little button that looks like a piece of film (please note that you can also add photos by clicking on the camera icon, or add links by clicking on the icon that looks like a chain). Once you’ve clicked on the icon, just add the URL of YouTube or Vimeo video to the available box and press “Preview”. If you’re happy with it, click on “Add Video” and the video will be added to both the Activity Stream and your profile.
Invite Your Friends
If you would like to invite your friends to Metalwork then go to the “My Account” tab and go to “Send Invites” and “Invite New Members”. Then you just need to follow the instructions on that page and enter your friends’ email addresses… and Bob’s your uncle!
Please note that this page is a work in progress and I will be adding more information to it as time goes on (especially if new features get added to the site). If there is something missing that you think should be added ASAP, then please let me know by posting your suggestions in the comments box below.
Cheers!
Lou
Off Topic: Lou says “Click here for weekly guilt-free downloads”. Isn’t Lou lovely?
