This is Bloodstock, through the eyes of Yours Truly… me. Please keep in mind that any views through my eyes during that time period may have been slightly… blurry. I blame the alcohol pixie! Damn you alcohol pixie!

Unfortunately, it is impossible to watch every single band at a festival – that is, of course, unless you have the ability to split yourself into multiple parts and you don’t feel the need to eat. So, since Loucifer Speaks is very much a one woman band, I can only tell you about the bands that I did see. Seems obvious really, but I just thought I’d mention it.

To be honest, I wasn’t planning on writing any kind of review for Bloodstock since it was meant to be a holiday… but, meh, here I am! To keep things nice and simple, I’m going to give each band a score out of 10 and put it next to their name when I mention them… e.g. The Smurfs [7]. Geddit? Got it? Good

THURSDAY
My little Bloodstock holiday started on the Thursday (because that’s how I roll… and it’s when the coach was) and so the first band I saw was Achren [7]. Not only was Achren’s set a fantastic way to spend roughly half an hour of your life, but it was also the band’s album launch. Even though the set was relatively short, the band still managed to showcase their talents and I’m sure more than a few handfuls of people left the Sophie Lancaster tent as newly converted Achren fans. Following hot on Achren’s heels were Revoker [7]. At first, I thought Revoker’s brand of Metallic Rock was an odd choice, but festivals are all about mixing things up and Revoker really captured the mood of the crowd. People were singing, dancing, jumping and headbanging. All in all, these are all good signs of a job well done!

Next up were Xerath [6] who put on a great show in spite of the muddy sound that they seemed to be experiencing. I really do feel that they could have sounded better and this affected my overall listening experience… in fact, I know that they can sound better. Perhaps it was just bad luck, or poor set up, or maybe it was the tech gremlins. Still, I had beer and metal and therefore I was happy. Beholder [7] put on a great show and were the band of the night for me. Awesome songs, a terrific stage presence and a fantastic cover of Lamb of God’s “Redneck” proved that this is a band who really know what they’re doing!

FRIDAY
When I woke up on Friday morning I had every intention of seeing The Defiled – I really did. Unlike some people, I actually do believe that they’re a great band – and an incredibly entertaining live band as well. I still can’t believe the amount of stick they (and the Bloodstock organisers) got when they were announced for this festival. Anyway, as I said, I planned to see them, but I ended up going on a backstage tour instead. No, this wasn’t because I have a nice website, this was because I’m a member of the Rock Society. I may be a member of the press (well, if you use the term EXTREMELY loosely ), but I’m happy to pay my way and support the bands and festivals that I like. The only thing that bugged me was that I didn’t have a photo pass. Maybe next year? *Fingers crossed that someone from Bloodstock-land is reading this*

Instead, the first band for Saturday for me was Wolf [6]. I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing these guys before, but I’m pleased to say that they really know how to work a crowd – especially considering they were one of the first bands to play. A little cheesy in places, but on the whole they were good quality traditional metal. Poisonblack [10] were on top form – even though Ville was injured and had to spend the whole set sitting down. I still can’t describe how good I thought they were without resorting to high pitched squeaking. But, believe me, they were good. Worship them now!

Triptykon [9] were awe-inspiring, but I really think that their set would have been even better had it been dark. Byfrost [9] were amazing and their set really showed that they need more recognition over here. Perhaps a headline UK tour is in order? Blackened thrash at its absolute best! I’ve also interviewed the band and this will be online very soon.

Due to the Byfrost interview (and the fact that Charlotte (my gig buddy) and I got distracted by the bar), the next (and final) band for Friday was WASP [10]. WASP may not have the best track record with albums – I’d be lying if I said that I loved everything they’ve ever released, but they certainly know how to put on a show… and Blackie had the crowd in the palm of his hand. The band chose a terrific set list that included most of the classics. A great end to a great day!

SATURDAY
Skeletonwitch [8] kicked off Saturday in style and even managed to get a circle pit going at 11 o’clock in the morning. The band were full of energy and it was ridiculously infectious – Who needs coffee?

I’m not usually a fan of Power Metal (aside from Edguy and Powerwolf), but I was completely blown away by Tarot [8]. I seriously cannot fault their set at all. The music was amazing and the onstage banter was hilarious. Tarot is a band well worth checking out if you haven’t already. I even ended up buying their most recent album from one of the CD stalls. And… it was completely worth it! I have no doubt that a review of that little gem will be coming very soon!

I have to admit that I’m a little bit of a Finntroll [10] fangirl… but credit where credit is due – these guys really know how to get a crowd moving. If you can listen to Finntroll without having to jump around, headbang, do a little jig or move your body in some way, I reckon you’re from another planet. Finntroll played a fantastic selection of songs (some new-ish, some old) and – from what I could see – most of the crowd was lapping it up!

I’ve been waiting to see Wintersun [9] for years… and Jari Mäenpää and co didn’t disappoint! The songs sounded as good as they do on the album and we were even treated to something new. Does this mean that the new album will be released soon? I have my fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes crossed that this is the case.

Angel Witch [7] provided us all with an excuse to have a good ol’ sing-along. As much as I wanted to see Immortal [5], I found them to be pretty boring and we made our way to the bar pretty quickly. I’ll still happily listen to their albums, but live they just didn’t do it for me.

SUNDAY
1349 [9] started Sunday in a terrifically unholy way – and their set put Immortal to shame. Amazing stuff – and I’m definitely planning to see them when they come back to the UK in October! Primordial [7] were incredibly impressive – and even managed to hold the crowd’s attention when AA Nemtheanga lost his voice. Despite playing to a tent that was not at its capacity, Hellish Outcast [8] were astoundingly good! Hellish Outcast definitely get the Loucifer Speaks Stamp of Approval.

Exodus [7] were fantastic and have me kicking myself because I’ve never really paid a huge amount of attention to them – this will change now! At The Gates [8] were mesmerising and I sure as hell hope that this wasn’t really their last gig. Please, sir… Can we have some more?

I have to admit that following “Illud Divinum Insanus” (see my review here), I was a little bit apprehensive about seeing <a href ="http://www.facebook.com/officialmorbidangelpage" target =_"blank">Morbid Angel [10], but I shouldn’t have worried – these guys are absolute pros and I was putty in their collective hands from start til finish. Even the new songs sounded great live… I think I’m going to have to give the new album another listen. Definitely one of my favourite performances from the whole festival! Loved it! The atmosphere was amazing too

Next up were Motorhead [6]. Now, I LOVE Motorhead. I really do. I love them more than chocolate, but I really wasn’t feeling their set on this occasion… and I don’t think they were either. I noticed that they released a statement following Bloodstock saying that they were suffering from viruses, but I think the fans would have been happier and more sympathetic had an announcement been made before or during their set. As it was, the set was cut short with lots of stops and starts in between. I still love Motorhead and I’m not going to let one less-than-sensational bad gig put me off them (afterall, everyone has their ‘off days’).

If you saw any of the bands I haven’t mentioned, please feel free to post your thoughts in the comments box below… Hell, you can also comment on the bands that I have mentioned too.

Overall, Bloodstock was fantastic and I’m already looking forward to next year. Speaking of which, who would you like to see next year?

Also, next year I really want to make more of an effort to go to the New Blood stage… but Bloodstock need to stop putting good bands on the mainstage so then I have time to do so lol

Yesterday the lovely folks at Bloodstock HQ announced the latest crop of bands to be added to its ever-expanding bill. Now, rather than just copy what every other site has written about this, I’d decided to do something a little different. I’m going to give you my thoughts on this little announcement. Rather than remaining somewhat neutral, I’m going to give you my opinion. Why? Because I bloody well want to.

Personally, I’m over-the-moon about this announcement. No doubt there’s a shedload of people out there who are disappointed, but that’s the same for any festival announcement. It proves once again that (no matter how hard you try) you just can’t please everyone. Incidentally, how much is a shedload? Is it more or less than a shitload?

In case you hadn’t guessed from my highly informative title, the latest additions to BOA 2011′s line up are: Finntroll, Wintersun and Forbidden. These bands will join the likes of Motorhead, Immortal, WASP, Morbid Angel, Triptykon, Poisonblack, Nevermore and a whole host of others to entertain us while we try to drink our body weight in beer. The full line up so far can be found here.

Wintersun

The big question being thrown around now is “Will Wintersun show up this time?”. And “they cancelled last time, so what’s to stop them doing it again?”. And “does this mean ‘Time’ will be released soon?”. Sadly, I cannot give you the answers here. My crystal ball has stopped working (note to self: crysal balls are not bowling balls). However, it is nice to have a little bit of speculation. The whole “will they, won’t they” question will keep Bloodstock in the public eye (well, the Metal Public Eye) even when they haven’t got any bands to announce. It’s a smart move. I like it. Kudos to Bloodstock.

I’ve got my fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes crossed in the hope that Wintersun prove all of the nay-sayers wrong and not only play at BOA, but blow everyone else out of the water. With the first album alone they’ve got the material to be able to pull it off. Also, if they did release “Time” soon, I’d be a very happy bunny. Please feel free to post your thoughts on Wintersun in the comment box below – that’s what it’s there for!

Anyway… moving on…
The other part of the announcement that I’m REALLY excited about is Finntroll. This band is amazing – both on record and live. Plus, they play music that’s perfect to drink to. And they have terrific energy on stage.

As for Forbidden… well, I’ve never got into them. Perhaps I should check them out some more before August? If you have any recommendations, please stick them in the comments box below.

Now, if Bloodstock would like to make this festival perfect, they should book Obituary, Nervecell, Order of Ennead, Hail of Bullets, Keep of Kalessin, Kalmah, Vesania, Omnium Gatherum, Devilish Impressions, The Evil Amidst, etc… (I could go on all day! )

I mentioned yesterday that more bands would be announced for Download last night… and, unsurprisingly, they were! AC/DC and co will now be joined by Aerosmith (I’ve read that they will be fronted by Steven Tyler), Rage Against The Machine, Lamb of God, Five Finger Death Punch and Stone Sour. It looks like an amazing line-up so far, but I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. Why? Simply because I’d built my hopes up and convinced myself that Guns N’ Roses would be announced too. I guess there’s still time, but now that all of the headline slots have been filled, it kinda looks unlikely.

Anyway… Yesterday (a few hours before the announcement), I discussed with people (pretty much anyone who would listen) which bands I would like to play at Download this year. Once I’d finished it was helpfully pointed out that the festival was called Download and not LouFest. I must admit that the idea of LouFest is very appealing… so I started to think about who would play at LouFest… and this is what I came up with…

(Judging by this list, it may have to be several days long! …and this list isn’t really in order… although GN’R would probably be headlining)

Guns N’ Roses – Well, GN’R had to be there really, didn’t they? Since this is MY festival I get to pick which line-up of GN’R plays (it’s nice to play God at times)… Perhaps surprisingly, I’d like to see the current line-up. The YouTube videos and the bootlegs of the shows I’ve seen from Asia and Canada (and the surprise shows in New York) look and sound AMAZING! I’d have to be an idiot to not want to witness that firsthand! Also, since this would be MY festival, I’d like to suggest one or two songs for their set list – “Prostitute”, “This I Love”, “I.R.S”, “Estranged”, “Coma”, “Back Off Bitch”, “My Michelle”, “You’re Crazy”, “Shackler’s Revenge”, “Better”, “There Was a Time”, “Scraped”, “Madagascar”, “Street of Dreams”… well, you get the idea…

Black Ritual – There’s a chance that not everyone reading this will know who Black Ritual are. Well, I’ll bring you up to speed… they’re awesome! “1000 Yard Stare” was a crazily superb album and I’m really looking forward to the follow up. I’d be over the moon if they played “War Within”, “Terrified”, “These Pills” and “Below Zero”.

Lamb of God – Here’s another band that HAD to be there. Astoundingly good both live and on CD, it would be stupid not to include them on the bill. Songs I’d like to hear: “Reclamation”, “A Devil in God’s Country”, “Bootscraper”, “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For”, “Grace”, “Walk With Me in Hell”, “Redneck”, “Choke Sermon”… etc…

Omnium Gatherum – I love Omnium Gatherum. Really, really love them! And yet, I’m still not sure how to describe them… perhaps melodeath with a progressive edge? Whatever they are, they’re bloody brilliant! I would list songs I’d want to hear… but anything will do …especially “Just Signs”.

Devilish Impressions – I’ve had a bit of an obsession with Devilish Impressions since I first heard “Plurima Mortis Imago”. As far as I’m concerned, that album was (and still is) a masterpiece! Also, they’re bloody good live!

Vesperian Sorrow – Lou likes Vesperian Sorrow. A lot. The band can do no wrong!

Winterthrall – An awesome band that’s not afraid to work in different styles. I don’t care what they played so long as they did play! But, if they were up for taking requests, “Autumn Caskets” wouldn’t go amiss

Enfold Darkness – I’ve got so into this band recently. They are AMAZING!

Michael Monroe – Singer from Hanoi Rocks and solo stuff. Damn good… and he could always do a duet with Axl for “Dead, Jail or Rock ‘n’ Roll”.

Hate Ammo – Brilliant band! I can’t wait for their album to be released on CD (in the meantime you can listen to tracks on their MySpace). Definitely more than worthy of a spot here!

December Flower – This is a band that I discovered through the wonders of MySpace. Damn good.

Ozzy Osbourne – No explanation needed.

Sebastian Bach – I’ve really got into his “Angel Down” album recently (it’s amazingly good – if you haven’t listened to it yet, you should). A couple of duets with Axl would go down rather well too.

Tension Head – Another ‘MySpace’ band with a great sound! I’d love to hear “The Bear” and “Don’t Worry” live!

Metallica – I never used to be that into Metallica… but “Death Magnetic” changed all of that.

Finntroll – If you have not witnessed the majesty of Finntroll (either on album or live), then you have missed out.

Five Finger Death Punch – 5FDP are amazing live! I have to admit that I haven’t got into “War is the Answer” as much as “The Way of the Fist”, but if they played LouFest it would give them the opportunity to ‘sell’ those songs to me… as I’m sure they’ve all lost a lot of sleep over the fact that I didn’t like that album quite as much… That seems likely.

Aerosmith – Again, no explanation needed. However, Steven Tyler would HAVE to be there!

Thunder – I’d make Thunder reform for LouFest… If I smiled sweetly I’m sure they’d say ‘yes’.

Motorhead – No reason needed.

Alice Cooper – He’s a legend. He must play.

Meat Loaf – The first album I ever bought (on cassette!) was Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell” when I was 9. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Autumnal Reaper – Autumnal Reaper are one of those bands that I’d been meaning to listen to for ages… I recently got their latest album and was blown away.

Stigma – Love, love, love these guys! Can’t wait to hear the new stuff!

Crionics – Quazarre (Devilish Impressions) might find himself getting a bit tired, but Lou likes Crionics.

The Defiled – They’re bat-shit crazy, but in a truly wonderful way. And, well, they rock. So there.

Megadeth – It had to be done

Cor Scorpii – Listen to “Monument”. I don’t need to say anymore than that.

Bon Jovi – I know, I know… Jovi. I’ve lost interest in them for the past few albums, but if they played LouFest I would insist that they only play stuff from “New Jersey”, “Slippery When Wet”, “These Days” and “Keep The Faith”. I’m in charge, so I get to do things like that.

Terrorvision – Tequila, it makes me happy…

Skunk Anansie – Do I really need a reason? They’re brilliant!

Slipknot – I’m not a mega-fan of Slipknot, but I do like a lot of their stuff… and I’d love to see ‘em live… so that’s why they’re on the list!

Danko Jones – They recently toured Canada with Guns N’ Roses and Sebastian Bach and I read quite a few good things about them in relation to that tour… so I decided to check them out… and they rocked.

Sixx A.M. – DJ Ashba’s gonna be a bit busy, but I’ve really got into Sixx A.M.’s album.

A Road Eternal – A brutally awesome band. Everyone should worship them… Loucifer has spoken.

My Undoing – Another band from the same part of the world as Black Ritual and A Road Eternal. I think there’s something in the water there…

Buckcherry – They were fantastic at Sonisphere last year. I’m sure they’d be equally fantastic at LouFest.

Black Label Society – Zakk fuckin’ Wylde. I’ll say no more.

Arch Enemy – Brilliant vocals, brilliant guitar work… brilliantness…

Machine Men – Fantastic band… if you have not checked them out yet, you should do so… now!

Edguy – Great band! And, I want them to play “Trinidad”.

Balfor – Astounding Barbaric Black Metal.

Black Lotus – I’d imagine Black Lotus would be cool to chill out to.

Cancer Bats – Recently got into these guys – gotta catch ‘em live!

Ok… I gotta admit… I’m getting a bit tired of writing explanations now… so I’m just gonna give you a nice list!

Ironside

I wish this was real
