Freebie of the Week: Thorngoth
Yeah, I know it’s late. Very late… but the Queen gave us some extra time off and I got confused. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it…
In case you’re not familiar with the concept of “Freebie of the Week”, here’s a brief explanation… Each week I go on a little hunt through the vast wastelands of the Internet in search of FREE and LEGAL downloads. So, all of the downloads featured here will be obtainable through trustworthy means… and they’ll be guilt-free. For example, I will only ever feature music available from official band websites, profiles (such as MySpace, Reverbnation or Facebook) and Last.fm (or equivalent).

I absolutely love Thorngoth – they’re a terrific Black Metal band and they have a few tasty tracks available for download from their Last.fm page. Oh, and did I mention they’re FREE?

Info:
THORNGOTH, which means “the horned enemy” in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Eldar language, was founded 2003 in Bad Tölz, Germany. Since their very first days the band stands for their style to play Black Metal of the second generation in a modern way.
The 2005 already published Demo “Sigillum” presented the evidence
By the 2007 via Northern Silence Productions released album “Thelema of Destruction” THORNGOTH …for the first time got more attention by a large public. The press as well as the fans were impressed by the impact of this album.
2008 the second album “Rauhnacht” followed. THORNGOTH demonstrated their ability to develop without abolishing proven methods.
On several gigs, e.g. the Under The Black Sun Festival 2009, THORNGOTH showed that they scores live as well as on their records.
In summer 2010 the third tonal sledgehammer, entitled “Leere”, was released. On this album the band is focussing their best abilities and sets the physical and emotional emptiness to music. Celebrated by the press as “atmospheric drumbeat”(Metal.de) “Leere” elates press as well as fans.

I think it’s fair to say that I’ve been a bit slack with updating Loucifer Speaks lately… this is mainly due to a monstrous assignment that has been taking up far to much of my time. Anyway, I’ve just handed the little beastie in, so I thought I’d treat you all to a long over-due freebie…

Insomnium are currently touring with Paradise Lost… so, to celebrate that, I thought I’d share some of their demo tracks. You can download these tracks either by heading over to the Demos page on Insomnium’s official website or click on the individual links below:

Info:
Over the last decade Insomnium has slowly but surely made itself a household name among the melodic deathsters. Formed in 1997 in a somnolent town of Joensuu, in eastern Finland, these stern men have ever since redefined the boundaries of the genre. Two highly acclaimed demos already set the standard and in 2001 the band signed to UK label Candlelight Records.
At this point the founding members Markus Hirvonen (drums), Ville Friman (guitars) and Niilo Sevänen (vocals and bass) attached guitarist Ville Vänni to the band. The triumphant line-up had been born. Debut album In the Halls of Awaiting (2002) introduced a young and fierce band that combined aggression and violent riffing to melancholic atmosphere. Marriage of Scandinavian death metal and traditional Finnish tunes, catchy but progressive, melodic but brutal – these have been the Insomnium trademarks ever since. Debut was praised all over the metal world but the band still remained the Finland’s best kept secret.
With Since the Day It All Came Down (2004) the band moved further from the beaten paths of the genre. Album was darker, more challenging and the songs took meandering pathways: a rewarding journey for those who dare to take it. Exaltations followed, the prestige grew. In 2005 Insomnium made its first real tour outside Finland as they hit the shores of UK. The road had been long, narrow and rocky, but now things started to roll.
Third album Above the Weeping World (2006) was the breakthrough. Compositions and arrangements had reached a new pinnacle and the overall sound was heavier and richer. Album was tighter, meaner and more menacing than ever. Long-time friend Aleksi Munter did the epic keyboard parts which added a whole new layer to the songs. Album took the 9th spot on the Finnish album charts, Mortal Share video blared in MTV and Insomnium made long tours in Europe and North America with bands like Amorphis, Katatonia, Enslaved and Satyricon.
New album Across the Dark (2009) shows a band that knows its strenghts but isn’t afraid to evolve. Crux of the music is still melodic death metal but nuances are giving it a unique flavor. Keyboards are overwhelmingly epic and there are some stunning clean vocals by Jules Näveri. Bit of folk metal, pinch of doom, some thrashing, a whole lot of timeless melodies and progressive twists and there you have it: ingredients of the masterpiece.

Freebie of the Week: Lutemkrat
I have to apologise – this week’s Freebie is a day late. My only excuse was that I was too tired and hungover to do anything yesterday except for drink a certain, well-known cola drink and watch “Get Him To The Greek”. Other tasks – such as writing this – were beyond me. However, this week’s Freebie is so awesome, I’m pretty sure that you’ll be able to forgive me…

One-man Black Metal project, Lutemkrat, released one of my favourite albums back in 2007. Yep, “The Last Survivor” was THAT awesome! So, it was extra awesome when I found that a) new material had been released and b) it was FREE to download! Marvellous!
This is how the official Lutemkrat website describes the new EP:
“Visions from Dimensions Beyond Conception” is the new Lutemkrat EP, released as free digital download format on September 19th 2011 and consists of three tracks with approximately 13 minutes of music. Focused on existential questions, the lyrics also explore the cosmic significance on a philosofical perspective, creating conceptual relations and subtle visions in the mind of the listener.

Info:
In the second semester of the year 2000, Wolf Lutemkrat began to compose. After a few experiences, he decided to make his music all by himself (this way, he could be independent with his ideas).
In 2002, Lutemkrat rises as a one-man-band. The word “Lutemkrat” does not have a real meaning, it’s just a conceptual abstraction that defines the music themes: destruction, war, chaos, hatred, loyalty and honour.
In 2003, the mCD “Never Surrender” was recorded with 4 tracks: extreme music influenced by the 90′s black metal. The first edition was released in slipcase format limited in 66 hand-numbered copies.
After some time of inactivity, Wolf Lutemkrat signs with the canadian label Bleak Art Records for a full-length release in 2007.
On September 19th 2007 the first full-length CD entitled “The Last Survivor” was released. It has 8 tracks and runs over 42 minutes. The result is a evolution of the last work: extreme music, along accoustic guitar interludes and elements which reflects his identity.
After four years of silence, “Visions from Dimensions Beyond Conception” is released as free digital download format on September 19th 2011 and consists on three tracks with approximately 13 minutes of music. Focused on existential questions, the lyrics also explore the cosmic significance on a philosofical perspective, creating conceptual relations and subtle visions in the mind of the listener.
