Bit late again with this… especially since November’s almost over… but I’m sure I’ll get December’s one up late too so it’ll all work out

In case you’re not familiar with the idea, Metalhead of the Month is a short and sweet interview with a different metalhead… every month. Simple really. If you would like to be interviewed in the future, please let a comment below.

Metalhead of the Month: Blissfulviolet

1. Which band first got you into metal?

Guns N Roses. I remember watching the “Welcome to the Jungle” video on MTV when it first aired. I must have been 6 or 7 years old at the time but it made me aware that there was more heavier music out there than what my parents listened to around me… The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin etc. After that I discovered Iron Maiden, Metallica and the rest is history.

2. What was the first metal gig you ever went to?

I snuck out to a few local punk, metal shows in my area but the actual first metal concert experience I recall was checking out Megadeth and Corrosion of Conformity back in 1995.

3. What are your Top 5 albums of all time?

Iron Maiden – Piece of Mind/Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Bathory – Hammerheart, Death – Symbolic, Dissection – Reinkaos, Black Sabbath – Paranoid

4. What are your Top 5 albums of 2011 so far?

The new Goreaphobia album “Apocalyptic Necromancy” is extremely killer. Saxon’s “Call to Arms” was a great listen. Satan’s Host “By the Hands of the Devil” is also worth checking out, it features the return of original vocalist Harry Conklin-which gives the album that primitive back to roots feel! And you can’t go wrong with “Abzu” from Absu. Nightbringer also upped the ante with “Hierophany of the Open Grave.”

5. What has been the most disappointing album of 2011 so far?

I haven’t really ran across one.

6. What is the most embarrassing CD / MP3 in your music collection?

Embarrassing? Well aside from cds, I have a HUGE collection of vinyl from everything like Judas Priest, Motley Cure, Bob Seger to The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Turtles, Neil Young and even Joan Baez. I love 60’s/70’s rock/folk music and 80’s wave… which might surprise a few but there should be no shame or boundaries when you simply love music.

7. Do you prefer CDs, MP3s or vinyl?

Vinyl, I need to start collecting again.

8. Can you play an instrument? If so, what?

Not anymore. As a child, my father taught me how to read music, play acoustic guitar and the organ/keyboards but I never bothered to stick with anything. I was more interested in writing and the vocal aspect of music. As time went on, I stuck with writing but if time provides, I would like to pick up from where I left off.

9. Are you in a band?

No but my husband Steve (Ancient Malus) and I are in the beginning stages of working on a studio project called Serpents Woe, where I plan on putting some of my poetry/lyrics to music. We’ll see how that goes, at the moment most of our time is spent running an online/print metal publication called Beyond the Dark Horizon. We also book events and tours for local, regional, national bands when the opportunity presents itself.

10. What’s the ‘metal scene’ like in your area? Where are you from?

Texas in general has always had a great scene for metal. Locally in San Antonio it’s another story. Folks tend to come out to shows featuring mainstream acts and show little support for the underground events. And like any scene, everyone has their own little “click” of friends who support their own cause. Bands come and go, people relocate, have kids and settle down. In the end only the strong survive. On the upside, San Antonio has several great promoters who continue to put Texas back on the map. Unlike other rural cities in Texas, San Antonio always has a metal show going on- its just a matter of getting everyone out there.

11. Which bands should we all be listening to? Please feel free to provide links!

If you like your metal black, thrashy and meaningful, check out Maiestas from Dallas, TX.
They are truly one of Texas’ hidden gems. I was floored after seeing their live performance. Cool genuine, talented guys who are in this business strictly for the metal-the way it should be.

Also my husband’s band Ancient Malus from San Antonio, TX, aside from their DIY attitude, the work these guys do (booking events, providing exposure for bands through interviews and promotion) should not go unnoticed.

Benatnash, Ophian, Adumus, Obeisance, Kult ov Azazel , Ceremonial Castings, Nokturnel, Vektor, Thornspawn, Nodens, Labei Ritual, Humut Tabal, Butchered Saint, Immolith, HOD and Emperial Massacre are some of the many hard working bands that continue to keep the extreme metal flame burning!

12. Which metal track should replace the national anthem (well, the national anthem of whichever country you happen to be in!)?

“Metal Gods” from Judas Priest, hands down!

13. Who is the best band on the planet?

Iron Maiden. And don’t try to argue with me because I’ll win!

14. Who is the worst band on the planet?

Band or bands? Haha, not sure where to begin. HIM, Slipknot and all the crap bands that invented the term emo.

15. What was the last gig you went to?

Gathering of Bestial Vengeance Fest II in Dallas, TX which featured some great black, death metal bands from around Texas. Wild night! Dallas knows how to have a great time.

16. What gig are you planning to go to next?

Mayhem December 3rd in San Antonio, TX

17. Can you tell us a random fact about yourself?

I’m a proud devoted mother, wife, music enthusiast, poet, journalist and photographer who loves a new challenging adventure.

18. What will bring about the zombie apocalypse?

Aren’t we already the living dead?

19. Will they be fast zombies or slow zombies?

Hopefully fast, none of this Hollywood cinema BS.

20. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Hails to Loucifer Speaks for featuring me! Please be sure to stop by Beyond the Dark Horizon at beyondthedarkhorizon.com to check out what we do. ~ Blissfulviolet

Thanks!

What with Freebie of the Week and now this, Loucifer Speaks seems to be spawning new features left, right and centre at the moment. This can only be a good thing, surely!

Metalhead of the Month is exactly what it says on the tin – each month, Loucifer Speaks will feature a short, yet sweet interview with a different metalhead. The questions will remain more or less the same, but I have the feeling that we will find ourselves with some supremely diverse answers. I will be choosing Metalheads via the Loucifer Speaks forum, our Facebook page, our Twitter page and our Google+ page. Basically, if I’ve had a little chat with you and I think you’re interesting, I will ask you if you want to take part in this.

Below you will find our first Metalhead of the Month. Why is Simon the first? Well, he helped me to come up with the idea. So, credit where credit’s due! THANKS DUDE!!!

According to my boyfriend, when GN’R emerged the world of Rock and Metal changed and, although I’m a little bit too young to have the first-hand experience of this, I agree. Guns N’ Roses knocked all of the other bands who passed for Hard Rock on their asses (e.g. Bon Jovi and Def Leppard). Suddenly just looking pretty and having a big chorus wasn’t enough. You needed balls, you needed attitude and you needed to be the real deal. And, at the time, GN’R were the real deal – they didn’t just sing about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll – they lived it. And they certainly had balls.

Anyway, on Saturday, my boyfriend and I were in the pub with my aunt and uncle discussing the highs and lows of rock and metal. Not only does this prove that I have a very cool family, but it also leads to me having some pretty interesting content for this site. After a while, the conversation turned to the state of Metal (and Rock) as a whole at the moment. We talked about how it was difficult to get people to go to gigs and how absolutely ridiculous the Metal selection in HMV is. We all agreed that this could be, at least in part, due to the fact that Metal isn’t really mainstream. One or two bands may be household names, but many of them (such as Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Motorhead) have been around for years anyway. We need some new blood. It was at this point when Mark put forward this idea: There needs to be another Guns N’ Roses. Not necessarily a band that looks or sounds like GN’R (what would be the point in that?!), but a band to take the world by storm like GN’R did. A band mainstream enough to earn the right amount of media attention, but heavy enough to please your average metalhead.

If such a band were to exist and get the same kind of breaks that GN’R got, would this mean that the whole Metal genre would get more exposure? It could do. It could also mean that the other mainsteam metal acts out there would have to up their game.

However, the times have changed. When GN’R hit the big time, they were all over Kerrang! and all over MTV. These days Kerrang! has been shunned by most metalheads over the age of 16 and >MTV wouldn’t know a rock/metal video if it bit it in the arse. Hitting the big time these days would require an entirely different plan of action.

The obvious tool at our new band’s disposal would be the Internet. But, with so many bands (some better than others) fighting for attention online, is just sticking some tracks on the social networking site of your choice really a viable option. In order for our (currently) fictional band to be able break free from the herd, we need a massive PR campaign. As a fan, I’d say that above all else, the music is the most important thing in this scenario, but – for those outside of the metal/rock world – something else would be needed. Afterall, if they’re not looking for that particular band (or bands like it), how are they going to find it? So, a massive, well-planned and well-executed PR campaign would be in order.

Whatever that may involve remains to be seen at the moment. It’s also important to remember that it is unlikely that our band will have the backing of a large record company for this. You can blame the evolution of the music business for that (and, by that, I mean the combination of greedy record execs and illegal downloads – but I won’t go into the pros and cons of illegal downloads at the moment… maybe that can be a topic for another day!). So, as a result of that, whatever PR campaign that happens will need to be run independently.

Which brings me to my next point…
Even if our band is lucky enough to have a mind-blowing PR campaign and achieve the kind of fame and recognition as GN’R, will they have the same opportunities available to them? They may be known by just about everyone, but will they have the finances available to be able to go on massive world tours? My guess would be no. As I mentioned previously, the music industry has changed. Not everyone buys music any more, so the bands (and whoever else happens to be involved) will not earn the same amount of money – meaning that a tour on the scale of what GN’R did to promote the “Use Your Illusion” albums would be pretty much impossible. So, in effect, it doesn’t look like there ever could be another band that could do the same sort of thing as GN’R did.

But, hey, I guess that doesn’t really matter. I’m not concerned that Joe Public doesn’t know who my favourite bands are (in fact, I’m kinda glad). The only thing that does concern me is (going back to one of my original points) the lack of people at gigs. Yes, we still have the underground, but in order for the music and the bands to prosper, we (as the Metal Community!) really have to get behind it. We’ve gotta make sure that we get off our backsides and go to gigs when we can. We should buy the album instead of obtaining it for free.

I’ll probably never be able to walk into HMV and be able to pick up an album that I want, but there’s always online shopping!

WARNING: This review contains MY opinion (that’s a shocker, right?).

All of the photos used in this article were taken by me.

It’s around 2pm here on the 14th October and I’ve finally got myself in the position where I can write this review. Amazingly, I have already read some (somewhat negative) reviews online – some of which were possibly posted while the band was still playing! But hey, that’s not my problem. I’m just going to review the gig from my perspective. I could lie and say that I was going to be ‘objective’, but – when you’re a fan of a band – I really don’t think that’s entirely possible. Instead, I’m just going to tell you what I thought of the gig and just be honest about the whole thing. Which is kind of the whole point anyway…

The doors opened at 6.30pm and I secured my spot on the barrier – there was no way in Hell I was moving until the show was over… even if it meant I was there until 3am. You see, this gig was announced months ago, surely that was more than enough time for people to manage to make arrangements should the situation arise where GN’R were late? Well, you’d certainly think so. I did, and arranged my journey home with no problems… and that was before I knew that the O2 had been kind enough to lay on a free bus and train service into London Bridge, Waterloo and Charing Cross. The O2 gets Brownie points for that!

Sebastian Bach took to the stage at around 7.30pm (although, according to Facebook/Twitter the band had planned to go on half an hour earlier. I’m not sure what happened there, so I won’t comment further). I last saw Sebastian Bach in 2006 at Bloodstock and, I have to say, last night’s performance blew that one away. Bach was in fine voice and the band were as tight as spandex on a sumo wrestler. Nick Sterling was particularly impressive and definitely a guitarist to keep an eye on. This guy is only 20 years old and he is amazing!
Despite Bach’s best efforts, it did seem that much of the crowd needed a jump start or something to get going. With that said there were a few others like myself singing along and screaming where appropriate. By the way, I’d like to make a public apology to Baz for butchering his songs by singing out of key. Sorry dude!
The band’s set consisted of tracks from Sebastian Bach’s most recent album, “Angel Down” as well as classics from his time in Skid Row. There was also a brand new song to whet your appetite for the forthcoming album.
Highlights? There were plenty! The new song was superb (although I can’t remember the name of it… if anyone does know the name, please comment and let me know), “I Remember You” (I actually got goosebumps at this point) and “You Don’t Understand” stand out especially. It would have been cool if Axl had joined Baz onstage for “(Love Is) A Bitchslap”, “Stuck Inside” and “Back In The Saddle” but we can’t have it all.

I can’t remember what time Sebastian Bach left the stage and I wasn’t really too concerned. I was there to enjoy the show and not be a clockwatcher (plus, as mentioned earlier, I had made arrangements for if I missed the last tube).

At 9.36pm (I was told this was the exact time after the fact!) the lights dimmed and Guns N’ Roses’ intro music started. I’ve read reports online that GN’R were an hour late. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t think that 9.30pm is a particularly late start for a headlining band. Yes, the band did stop playing at around 00.20 and, yes, I did miss my tube… but I didn’t care. This is rock ‘n’ roll – it’s rebellious and it’s got to break a few rules and push a few boundaries every now and then. It’s not a fuckin’ board meeting!

Anyway, the time the band started and finished is irrelevant – the music (and the performance) is more important… and this is something that I think gets overlooked a lot. Following the reports I’d read about the band’s performances at Reading and Leeds in August, I have to admit to feeling a teeny weeny bit apprehensive. Perhaps all of the YouTube videos I’d seen online for this tour had been an elaborate hoax and the band had lost it. However, when the opening track “Chinese Democracy” started and I looked up and saw DJ Ashba silhouetted against the GN’R logo, all of my doubts vanished.

I know that there are people out there who are concerned about Axl’s voice. Well, let me assure you – there is no need to be concerned. Last night he hit every note. Right on the button! He and the rest of the band played stuff from “Chinese Democracy” and older stuff with equal amounts of energy and attitude. From where I was, it looked like everyone in that band gave it their absolute all. I’d like to make a special mention about Richard Fortus – one of the band members that I have to admit I’ve never paid a huge amount of attention to. Last night changed all of that. That guy has laid-back charisma oozing from every pore and is hypnotic to watch. As expected DJ Ashba proved himself to be a terrific showman and interacted with the crowd on a number of occasions. Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal was astoundingly good – this guy plays the guitar like it’s an extension of his body and Tommy Stinson is the absolute definition of cool. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see a lot of Chris Pitman as he was on the other side of the stage to me… I had a better view of Dizzy Reed from where I was. Speaking of Dizzy, he was fantastic – and the ‘Dizzy’ chant from the crowd when he took to the centre stage to do his solo was unexpected and wonderful. As for the man behind the drums, Frank Ferrer – I honestly think that he is the best drummer that Guns N’ Roses has ever had. Steven Adler and Matt Sorum were good, I’m not arguing against that, but this guy is just jaw-droppingly good!

Axl appeared to be in a good mood, although he was relatively subdued between songs. He did, however, light-heartedly put a stop to any bottle-throwing shenanigans before they got out of hand by saying “Now, now, now, let’s not be throwing things, because you might miss me and you might hit one of these nice people down at the front. And we wouldn’t want that to happen”. He also wore a black feather boa that someone threw onstage and then, during a cover of AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie”, he briefly wore a KFC bucket kindly donated by a crowd member.

On a completely personal note, for one night I was able to forget that I had bills to pay, I could forget that I could be made redundant soon and I could forget just how much I usually hate the month of October. For one night I was able to completely and truly immerse myself in the music… and that, my friends, considerably outweighs any negative comments I’ve read about GN’R or Axl himself. I’m sorry bitter people of the Internet, you’re just going to have to try that little bit harder. If you do have any negative comments that you’d like me to read, please write them on a piece of paper and post them to me. I’m sure I could find a use for them… toilet paper is so damn expensive these days…

Overall, this was an astounding gig and one that I’ll no doubt be riding high on until the next time I can see the band.
