As a way to spread the word about Loucifer Speaks, I have decided to launch the “zine-ette”. The “zine-ette” is a small, 4 page printed zine that will be distributed at gigs (and given free with all orders in the Loucifer Speaks Shop). It’s slightly more interesting than a flyer and will give LS-newbies a nice bitesized introduction into what the site is all about. The cover for issue #1 can be seen below.

Wanna print off a copy for yourself? Click here to download the PDF file. Print the document double-sided, fold it and it looks fabulous… well, kinda!

Issue #1 features a portion of our interview with Sear Bliss, some Idillicah news, some Imperial Conquest news, some Wrapped in a Sheet news, a Nervecell review, a review of The Furious Horde’s EP, a Secrets She Kept review and some other information about the site, the forum and the shop (including news of the SIGNED Plutionium CDs we now have in stock!).

I’ve yet to decide how often these issues will be released… So, if you have any ideas, please let me know. Should it be monthly? Every 2 months? Every 6 months?

If you’re interested in helping us to distribute some of these bad-boys then please drop me a line. Also, if you want to put a link to the PDF on your own website / social network profile that would be awesome!

Nervecell have quickly become one of my favourite new (well, new-ish) Death Metal bands. They somehow manage to retain everything I like about old school Death Metal and still make it sound fresh and exciting. Their music is technical, but without ever sounding over the top. Their use of middle-eastern melodies remind me Nile, but I never feel like I’m listening to Nile (or a Nile clone for that matter). Nervecell are very much their own beast.

“Psychogenocide” is the band’s follow up to “Preaching Venom” – an album I purchased from CDBaby ages ago, but still manages to find itself on my playlist at least once a week. Since I rate “Preaching Venom” so highly, “Psychogenocide” had a lot of live up to. After my very first listen to the album, I knew that Nervecell had cracked it. They’ve really aimed high with this one.

The album opens with “Anemic Assugency” – a track that pretty much acts as a introduction and that straightaway reacquaints the listener with those Middle Eastern melodies that were pretty prominent in the last release. It’s very easy to imagine that I’m not in the UK when I listen to this. Then “Once Upon an Epidemic Scheme” kicks in and the calming melodies are all but forgotten. Complex riffs, deep vocals and insane drumming all spill out of the speakers and before you know it, you’re immersed in Nervecell’s highly addictive form of Death Metal. Not to mention the fact that these guys know the importance of a killer guitar solo. The one in “Once Upon an Epidemic Scheme” really cuts through the rest of track and makes you grab the nearest air guitar.

“All Eyes on Them” is an insane, frantic monster of a track. Heavy, yet still melodic. It also sets you up nicely for “Amok Doctrine” – a track knocks you on your arse almost immediately. “Amok Doctrine” is the kind of track that could easily incite a pit. I can almost imagine it being played at one of the summer festivals. Somebody needs to book this band for Bloodstock. NOW!

The title track gives me neck-ache just by listening to it. In fact, I was listening to it on the way to work this morning and I had to summon up all of my will-power not to try and headbang. Headbanging at stupid o’clock in the morning, while walking along a main road is most definitely not recommended. I need to remember this… otherwise it’s only a matter of time before the men in white coats come to take me away. Also, I must remember not to try and growl along when out walking… this is because it makes me look like a lunatic… and also because I can’t actually growl properly so it just sounds pathetic.

“Imprint” is another example of Nervecell’s seeming obsession to break my neck. Again we are pummelled by rapid fire drumming and HEAVY riffs and vocals. Then it’s time for “Shunq (To The Despaired… King Of Darkness)” where Mr Karl Sanders (of Nile) lends the band his vocal stylings. The track itself features vocals in both English and Arabic (don’t these guys know I have a hard enough time growling along in English? ). An incredibly enjoyable track from beginning to end. If you’ve never listened to Nervecell before, try to listen to this little beauty – you’ll be an instant convert.

“The Taste of Betrayal” acts as a brief interlude before “Driven By Nescience” crashes into your eardrums. The album closes with “Nation’s Plague” – a fantastic end to a fantastic album!

Does “Psychogenocide” surpass the heady heights reached by “Preaching Venom”? Yes – without a doubt!

Rating: 99%

Karl Sanders (from legendary Death Metallers Nile) will be providing some guest vocals on the forthcoming Nervecell album (“Psychogenocide”). The track is called “Shunq (To The Despaired King Of Darkness)” and will feature both English and Arabic lyrics. I’ve been informed that “Shunq” means two things in Arabic: to choke or to be hung by the neck. That sounds like some pretty good imagery for an extreme metal album to me! The song also talks about the battle between humans and demons (so, there’s some more great imagery for you!), with Satan being brought forth to justice in the end.

“Psychogenocide” is set to be released through Spellbind Records on 31st March 2011 in the Middle East, and on Lifeforce Records on 29th April in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The rest of Europe (including the UK) will get their turn on the 2nd May 2011.

The album’s artwork (shown above) was designed by Björn Goosses of Killustrations and Nervecell have said that it “perfectly matches the aggression and musical direction of the new album”.

The track listing for “Psychogenocide” is as follows:

1. Anemic Assurgency
2. Upon An Epidemic Scheme
3. All Eyes On Them
4. Amok Doctrine
5. Psychogenocide
6. Imprint
7. Shunq (To The Despaired King Of Darkness)
8. The Taste Of Betrayal
9. Driven By Nescience

Message from Nervecell:

Hey everyone!

It is with great pleasure to announce that we have set “PSYCHOGENOCIDE” as the title of our long-awaited new album, due for release late March 2011 in Europe through Lifeforce Records and Spellbind Records for the Middle East. The artwork has been a concept, which we have been working on for quite a while within the band and we are extremely proud of how it has turned out, perfectly matching the aggression and musical direction of the new album.

“PSYCHOGENOCIDE” is scheduled to be mixed and mastered at Hertz Studios (Behemoth, Decapitated, Vader) in Warsaw, Poland by the Wieslawscy Bros. This will mark the follow-up to our first full-length “Preaching Venom” which was released on October 26th 2009 on Lifeforce Records.

The artwork was designed by Killustrations (Aborted, Severe Torture, Zyklon)

The new songs are sounding aggressive, fast and dark! The fans can expect a heavy dosage of old-school death metal, modern thrash metal, intertwined with our touch of Eastern melodies and brutality.

Stay tuned for the album track list and more details to be announced very soon.

Nervecell have issued the following update about their forthcoming album via their official newsletter:

Hey everyone!

We are really thrilled that the writing process for the new album has been successfully completed and the band is eager to enter the studio next month and start recording. We’ve been working really hard on this record through out this year and in between the tours we’ve had in Europe and Asia. All the pre-production for the songs are done and we’re very happy with how everything has turned out for us so far.

The new songs are sounding aggressive, fast and dark! The fans can expect a heavy dosage of old school death metal, modern thrash metal, intertwined with our touch of Eastern melodies and brutality. Needless to say there will be more exciting news and surprises featured on this new record to follow.

The new (as-yet-untitled) album is set for a release early 2011 on Lifeforce Records (Europe) / Spellbind Records (Middle East). This will mark the follow up to the much anticipated 2009 debut “Preaching Venom” which was released in Europe in October 2009 on Lifeforce Records.

The album title and more details will be announced in the upcoming weeks, so make sure you stay tuned!

Follow NERVECELL on Twitter at twitter.com/nervecellband and join the official NERVECELL Facebook Page facebook.com/nervecell to receive quick updates on the new album!

Cheers!

Dubai’s Death Metal masters, Nervecell set my little world on fire from the minute I first heard their “Preaching Venom” album and so I was keen to catch up with them and hit them with a few probing questions…

Lou: Hi guys, thanks for taking the time out to answer my questions! How’s things with you today?

Rami: Thanks for having us! we are doing just fine. Pretty busy with the writing process and pre-production of the new album as we speak. It’s going great so far.

Lou: For the benefit of any of our readers who may not have heard of you, would you mind describing the music you play?

Rami: Basically, old school death metal mixed with modern thrash metal. Lots of groove and hints of oriental/Middle Eastern melodies.

Lou: Which bands have inspired you? What made you get into Metal in the first place?

Barney: Mainly the early death metal and thrash metal bands from the 90′s – Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, Death, Testament, Pantera, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Dismember, Deicide, Vader, Sepultura etc.
I got into metal while I started learning to play the guitar, basically the technicality involved and what it stood for lyrically and how different it all was compared to all the pop music around at the time is what I loved about it right from the start!

Lou: Who is in the band?

Rami: Barney and myself are the guitarists. James Khazaal is on bass and vocals. And we work with a live (session) drummer named Louis Rando from Australia.

Lou: It’s pretty much a well-known fact now that Nervecell is from Dubai. I imagine that there’s not a huge Metal scene in Dubai, is this the case?

Barney: Dubai for a metal scene has had its ups and downs, more of the latter though unfortunately. When we started this band back in 2000 the scene was huge, there were plenty of bands not necessary all extreme metal bands but still under the rock / metal genre which was great. Over the last few 6 years the scene was probably the best in the entire Middle East with festivals like the Dubai Desert Rock going on and attracting a lot of international known bands to tour this side of the world. I would say the metal scene is growing but not as consistent as it should be. Looking back at some of the earlier NERVECELL gigs there isn’t a single band today from those shows we’ve played that has stuck around this long. We really just have a handful of bands that are active and really just one or two pubs where metal heads can all go out and have a few drinks and enjoy listening to some tunes. Again thats an improvement to what it used to be, so one has to just be grateful and hope it gets better.

Lou: Has it been a struggle to get your music noticed?

Rami: Well I wouldn’t really call it a struggle, but we did go through hard times no doubt. We worked really hard on getting our music out there, the “old school way” performing live continuously, recording and releasing music, promoting ourselves locally and internationally, and of course constantly touring worldwide which came afterwards in the years. We knew that this way it would work for us, and we needed to learn it all in the process. Definitely metal in Dubai is not the easiest form of music to get out there, which in a way made things a bit slower for us, yet we appreciate it because we built a strong fanbase here in Dubai and the Middle East, which was really essential. We just didn’t want to be stopped at any point and kept things going. When we felt that its the right time time to tour outside Dubai, we toured Australia as for our first tour ever. It was just so crazy to go that far! it was such a great experience. We toured the Middle East, Europe and Asia after that so far which is great.

Lou: I’m guessing that the Internet has played a major role in getting your music out to a whole load of people… Do you think that the positive aspects of the Internet outweigh the negative ones (eg illegal downloads)?

Barney: I would have to agree with that to an extent, in this day and age the internet is the way to go to get noticed – its efficient and its gets your music to be accessed by the world over.
Although I have to also admit that most bands tend to rely on it way more than they actually should as well, I mean just cause you got a myspace site for your band doesn’t necessarily mean the jobs done. There is still things like taking your music out onto the stage and getting in the face of people, the media, promo, doing interviews and stuff that also count.
Touring for a band like us is essential cause thats really what keeps us together and makes us realize we have what it takes to make music a career, it motivates us being a band coming from the Middle East and not being able to play here as much as we’d like.

Lou: What are your views on illegal downloads?

Barney: Well we really cant stop it, as bad as it is effecting the industry – I believe just as there are fans who prefer downloading the album there are also fans who would go the stores and make sure they buy the album and support the band instead. A lot of metal fans still prefer / value having the artwork and the liner notes in the booklets of CD’s. Im one of them for sure as its still an experience for me when purchasing a new CD. At the end of the day as long as they come out to the shows and buy some merch its all still support!

Lou: Are you as addicted to social networking (Twitter, Facebook, etc) as I am? Haha!

Rami: Haha we keep it going as much as possible, we are on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and many others of course. Those are vital tools for promotion nowadays and we are always using them. Technology is one of the best tools to keep us connected with our fans everywhere!

Barney: I would say we use those sites mainly for promoting the band and keeping the fans updated! Its important to do so today and its always a good time hearing from the fans from time to time through such networks.

Lou: I’d like to take a moment to congratulate you on an absolutely killer album! I have certain bands/albums that I listen to on a near daily basis and “Preaching Venom” is right up there! What has the general reaction to the album been like from both the press and fans?

Rami: That’s great to know thank you! The reactions towards “Preaching Venom” has been beyond our expectations really. Really great feedback especially from our fans, press and media. Our intentions was to create a well written and produced album in order to have an impact in the metal world, and this impact was pretty huge. To simply say that from “Preaching Venom” many great opportunities have happened; from touring, playing major festivals like Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Rock am Ring etc., to getting signed to a well-respected metal label (Lifeforce Records) and of course gaining more and more fans worldwide.

Barney: Glad you dig the album mate! Indeed it was well received by both the fans and press alike with such killer reviews from all over the world.
Being our first full length too, we still are very honored and proud to have been able to do the things we have over the last 2 years since the album came out under Lifeforce Records. It’s a humbling feeling to see all the hard work pay off finally.

Lou: What sort of subjects have been tackled in the album’s lyrics?

Barney: There is a few more personal songs on this album in comparison to our EP “Human Chaos”, we have always had songs that revolve around subjects such as humanitarian, society and injustice issues. Not really pin pointing any incident in particular but stressing on similar situations or events that have taken place and which have effected us enough to write songs about.

Lou: The music on the album is insanely technical – do you have any tips for aspiring musicians who wish to play in a similar style?

Barney: Haha…wow man, I dont consider myself a teacher or a guitar GOD but all I can say is practice practice practice…its all I ever did and its always been 100% feel for me when playing my guitar rather than trying to replicate someone else’s playing style.

Lou: Do you have any guitar tabs available?

Barney: Not yet, we’ve been asked before…which means we should get around to it..Soon!

Lou: What equipment do you use?

Barney: Rami uses B.C. Rich Guitars and is endorsed by ENGL Amps, I use LTD Guitars and am endorsed by Madison Amps. James uses Spector Basses and is endorsed by them too.

Lou: I noticed (thanks to Twitter!) that you’re now endorsed by EMG pick-ups – how did that deal get set up?

Rami: Our management informed us that EMG are interested in endorsing us and we got the deal. I’ve been using EMG’s for 3 years now and glad we all joined the EMG artist roster.

Lou: Which track from the album is your favourite, and which track is the most popular at your gigs? Which one really gets the crowd going completely nuts?!

Barney: My favourite would probably be Ratios and Flesh and Memories, the most popular at the the gigs would have to be Flesh and Memories and Demean.
The one that gets the crowd going ape shit / nuts is definitely Existence Ceased though.

Lou: Other than “Preaching Venom”, do you have any other music available?

Barney: We released an EP entitled “Human Chaos” back in 2004, it consists of 5 tracks which we released independently by ourselves.
The “Preaching Venom” European release includes the “Human Chaos” 5 track CD as well as a bonus, so there is always that extra value that the loyal fans get when buying the original CD as opposed to downloading the album.

Lou: Have you been working on a follow-up to “Preaching Venom”?

Rami: Yes we are working on a new album at the moment. We are set for a release early 2011. We will be posting info on the new album very soon!

Lou: You guys were in the UK during March of this year (I think it was March anyway!), do you have any plans to return any time soon?

Rami: Yes! that was during our tour with Suffocation, Annotations Of An Autopsy, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Burning The Masses. We performed in Leeds, Birmingham and London. Honestly the London show at The Underworld was one of our favorite shows on that tour and we definitely would wanna come back again hopefully next year to support our upcoming album.

Lou: How would you describe a Nervecell gig?

Barney: Mosh Pits…Circle Pits…and a whole lot of sweaty Armpits too…haha – Nah seriously though we just try and get the crowd to go as crazy as possible, the crazier they are we always give back to them ten folds more!

Lou: Are there any countries or cities that you’d like to play in, but haven’t had a chance to yet?

Barney: I would have to say Japan and the U.S / Canada. Perhaps with the next record we could possibly get there. Would just need to get on the right tour and we’ll be sure to head down and create a huge buzz.

Lou: If you could tour with any other band, who would it be and why?

Barney: Slayer or Morbid Angel…well we obviously grew up to both those bands and before either one of them call it a day we would love the opportunity to not only get to meet them but sharing the stage night after night would just be EPIC.

Lou: What’s next for Nervecell?

Rami: There are a few possible shows to be booked for us in the Middle East which will end the “Preaching Venom” touring period. We’re now working on the new album writing process which should be complete soon and we shall enter the studio in December and target an album release early 2011.

Lou: And, the final words in this interview are yours – Do you have anything that you’d like to say to the readers of Loucifer Speaks?

Rami: Thanks for your time and support! for those who would like to check out Nervecell do visit www.myspace.com/nervecell and www.nervecell.net

Barney: We look forward to seeing you all on the road and thanks for reading this far into the interview

I mentioned yesterday that more bands would be announced for Download last night… and, unsurprisingly, they were! AC/DC and co will now be joined by Aerosmith (I’ve read that they will be fronted by Steven Tyler), Rage Against The Machine, Lamb of God, Five Finger Death Punch and Stone Sour. It looks like an amazing line-up so far, but I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. Why? Simply because I’d built my hopes up and convinced myself that Guns N’ Roses would be announced too. I guess there’s still time, but now that all of the headline slots have been filled, it kinda looks unlikely.

Anyway… Yesterday (a few hours before the announcement), I discussed with people (pretty much anyone who would listen) which bands I would like to play at Download this year. Once I’d finished it was helpfully pointed out that the festival was called Download and not LouFest. I must admit that the idea of LouFest is very appealing… so I started to think about who would play at LouFest… and this is what I came up with…

(Judging by this list, it may have to be several days long! …and this list isn’t really in order… although GN’R would probably be headlining)

Guns N’ Roses – Well, GN’R had to be there really, didn’t they? Since this is MY festival I get to pick which line-up of GN’R plays (it’s nice to play God at times)… Perhaps surprisingly, I’d like to see the current line-up. The YouTube videos and the bootlegs of the shows I’ve seen from Asia and Canada (and the surprise shows in New York) look and sound AMAZING! I’d have to be an idiot to not want to witness that firsthand! Also, since this would be MY festival, I’d like to suggest one or two songs for their set list – “Prostitute”, “This I Love”, “I.R.S”, “Estranged”, “Coma”, “Back Off Bitch”, “My Michelle”, “You’re Crazy”, “Shackler’s Revenge”, “Better”, “There Was a Time”, “Scraped”, “Madagascar”, “Street of Dreams”… well, you get the idea…

Black Ritual – There’s a chance that not everyone reading this will know who Black Ritual are. Well, I’ll bring you up to speed… they’re awesome! “1000 Yard Stare” was a crazily superb album and I’m really looking forward to the follow up. I’d be over the moon if they played “War Within”, “Terrified”, “These Pills” and “Below Zero”.

Lamb of God – Here’s another band that HAD to be there. Astoundingly good both live and on CD, it would be stupid not to include them on the bill. Songs I’d like to hear: “Reclamation”, “A Devil in God’s Country”, “Bootscraper”, “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For”, “Grace”, “Walk With Me in Hell”, “Redneck”, “Choke Sermon”… etc…

Omnium Gatherum – I love Omnium Gatherum. Really, really love them! And yet, I’m still not sure how to describe them… perhaps melodeath with a progressive edge? Whatever they are, they’re bloody brilliant! I would list songs I’d want to hear… but anything will do …especially “Just Signs”.

Devilish Impressions – I’ve had a bit of an obsession with Devilish Impressions since I first heard “Plurima Mortis Imago”. As far as I’m concerned, that album was (and still is) a masterpiece! Also, they’re bloody good live!

Vesperian Sorrow – Lou likes Vesperian Sorrow. A lot. The band can do no wrong!

Winterthrall – An awesome band that’s not afraid to work in different styles. I don’t care what they played so long as they did play! But, if they were up for taking requests, “Autumn Caskets” wouldn’t go amiss

Enfold Darkness – I’ve got so into this band recently. They are AMAZING!

Michael Monroe – Singer from Hanoi Rocks and solo stuff. Damn good… and he could always do a duet with Axl for “Dead, Jail or Rock ‘n’ Roll”.

Hate Ammo – Brilliant band! I can’t wait for their album to be released on CD (in the meantime you can listen to tracks on their MySpace). Definitely more than worthy of a spot here!

December Flower – This is a band that I discovered through the wonders of MySpace. Damn good.

Ozzy Osbourne – No explanation needed.

Sebastian Bach – I’ve really got into his “Angel Down” album recently (it’s amazingly good – if you haven’t listened to it yet, you should). A couple of duets with Axl would go down rather well too.

Tension Head – Another ‘MySpace’ band with a great sound! I’d love to hear “The Bear” and “Don’t Worry” live!

Metallica – I never used to be that into Metallica… but “Death Magnetic” changed all of that.

Finntroll – If you have not witnessed the majesty of Finntroll (either on album or live), then you have missed out.

Five Finger Death Punch – 5FDP are amazing live! I have to admit that I haven’t got into “War is the Answer” as much as “The Way of the Fist”, but if they played LouFest it would give them the opportunity to ‘sell’ those songs to me… as I’m sure they’ve all lost a lot of sleep over the fact that I didn’t like that album quite as much… That seems likely.

Aerosmith – Again, no explanation needed. However, Steven Tyler would HAVE to be there!

Thunder – I’d make Thunder reform for LouFest… If I smiled sweetly I’m sure they’d say ‘yes’.

Motorhead – No reason needed.

Alice Cooper – He’s a legend. He must play.

Meat Loaf – The first album I ever bought (on cassette!) was Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell” when I was 9. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Autumnal Reaper – Autumnal Reaper are one of those bands that I’d been meaning to listen to for ages… I recently got their latest album and was blown away.

Stigma – Love, love, love these guys! Can’t wait to hear the new stuff!

Crionics – Quazarre (Devilish Impressions) might find himself getting a bit tired, but Lou likes Crionics.

The Defiled – They’re bat-shit crazy, but in a truly wonderful way. And, well, they rock. So there.

Megadeth – It had to be done

Cor Scorpii – Listen to “Monument”. I don’t need to say anymore than that.

Bon Jovi – I know, I know… Jovi. I’ve lost interest in them for the past few albums, but if they played LouFest I would insist that they only play stuff from “New Jersey”, “Slippery When Wet”, “These Days” and “Keep The Faith”. I’m in charge, so I get to do things like that.

Terrorvision – Tequila, it makes me happy…

Skunk Anansie – Do I really need a reason? They’re brilliant!

Slipknot – I’m not a mega-fan of Slipknot, but I do like a lot of their stuff… and I’d love to see ‘em live… so that’s why they’re on the list!

Danko Jones – They recently toured Canada with Guns N’ Roses and Sebastian Bach and I read quite a few good things about them in relation to that tour… so I decided to check them out… and they rocked.

Sixx A.M. – DJ Ashba’s gonna be a bit busy, but I’ve really got into Sixx A.M.’s album.

A Road Eternal – A brutally awesome band. Everyone should worship them… Loucifer has spoken.

My Undoing – Another band from the same part of the world as Black Ritual and A Road Eternal. I think there’s something in the water there…

Buckcherry – They were fantastic at Sonisphere last year. I’m sure they’d be equally fantastic at LouFest.

Black Label Society – Zakk fuckin’ Wylde. I’ll say no more.

Arch Enemy – Brilliant vocals, brilliant guitar work… brilliantness…

Machine Men – Fantastic band… if you have not checked them out yet, you should do so… now!

Edguy – Great band! And, I want them to play “Trinidad”.

Balfor – Astounding Barbaric Black Metal.

Black Lotus – I’d imagine Black Lotus would be cool to chill out to.

Cancer Bats – Recently got into these guys – gotta catch ‘em live!

Ok… I gotta admit… I’m getting a bit tired of writing explanations now… so I’m just gonna give you a nice list!
